let me link a few other posts about this:
Melee attack’s direction doesn’t target on enemy but towards mouse cursor when locking on enemy.
That is to say, there is no difference between lock and no lock. Cursor must always keep traking on enemy to get a accurate hit or you’ll miss all hit.

Aside from the game not working for some people, this has to be the greatest plague on the game right now. And it’s bad…like really, really bad.
Not only does it lock onto the worst target, usually a witch not even agrod on you and two axe men chop you up. But even if you turn it OFF in the settings it’s still on. There won’t be a dot on the witch but my character will still be turned facing her as I get pummeled in melee. You’ve got to fix this. It’s insane that I can have 1 shot builds killin…
I’ve just switched my target 3 times and it immediately switched me back to the opponent that was targeted before. Please don’t.
Auto lock on should be a thing until I switch my target manually or after my current target dies. Why does it automatically lock onto the opponent who just got aggro’ed? That makes sense when my combat state switches from false to true, but not when I’m already in a fight.
Target switching also gets really frustrating when I’m amidst two melees trying to bash my skul…
and losing the lock on (at least as far as i observed) does not entirely seem random. i tried with auto lock on and with manual targeting. in both cases the character seems to lose lock on when either the distance gets “too far” or the character is turned around to face another direction.
