but it would still give players nothing who do want to go full on melee or do not want to use runes. its great for archers, mages etc, but with a rogue for example i get nothing out of it.
and “rune attacks are ripostes” will just never sit right with me. i can rune attack any time. its like saying swinging my sword is a riposte. its just not. at least for me and many others, otherwise this discussion would not come up every couple of days.
yeah something like that. i would even be ok with a simple debuff the enemy gets, so for example crit damage received for x seconds after parry, or whatever. does not have to be a fancy gut punch like in BB, just give me something other than a filling bar on top of my screen.
Yea that’s a good idea. Then whether it’s a normal attack, charged attack, or rune attack, you’re doing extra damage as a reward for parrying. I could go either way on if its a buff for you or debuff for enemy. A damage buff for you after parry makes more sense, but a debuff for the enemy parried is cool too, and would make for more fun moments of mobs accidentally killing each other. One of my favorite things to watch.
Maybe you could make something like a Riposte rune, but as a utility rune, so you can put it in a utility slot after patch 1 and keep all your normal rune attacks. You can use it, for example, only for 1 second after a parry, and not on all enemies. But it also only costs 50 focus, so you get more focus than you spend if you want to keep the 100 focus gain. But you can’t use it all the time. And if you want, you can simply ignore it.
maybe a compromise, but still a rune. why not just give a button prompt on a parried enemy like with backstabs. shows icon, u can either use rune like people do now or use this to perform a crit dmg melee riposte. everyone is happy.
Personally, I don’t know if a very strong attack that doesn’t cost any focus is actually very strong if you keep the 100 focus gain, so you can parry, riposte, and rune attack over and over again in a loop. (But I’d also prefer the riposte.)
yeah i guess it depends how u define rune attack. i am still a bit traumatized by the pre-breach rune spam meta where everyone just spammed lightning stike runes etc.
i actually meant a real melee attack that happens without runes u slot or have to buy or anything. just a simple combat mechanic like a backstab.
I don’t think adding riposte to the game really serves it better. At the moment to can parry an attack and then do a rune attack that can clear out a group of enemies, or blink away and heal, or do a freezing attack to further control the flow of the fight, or throw a fire axe at an enemy that’s far away. There are even certain setups that benefit from simply having high focus, getting +dmg, so it aids that as well. Dumbing it down by just adding iframes and a single high damage attack against the target you parried is a big step down in player choice from the current iteration.
That’s the reason why I’m trying to get Riposte into the game without taking away others’ options to play with other runes or whatever, so a step up not down.
that is exactly my take. let people keep their rune attack. but i play mainly builds that do not use runes or AOE runes to clear all mobs at once. i want to be a knife and dagger rogue, i do not want to suddenly spam an ult attack. especially since i can use that rune any time. its not a real reward for the parry. the only reward for parry is a 2sec stagger and a bar that fills up. that just does not satisfy me. giving me an additional riposte option does NOT hurt payers who love runes. but only having runes as option does hurt people who do not build their char around runes and focus.
As a close combat monk who just wants to punch his opponents in the face and not shoot fireballs or send earthquakes across the screen, I can only agree.
Yea I don’t really see an issue with that either. If focus gain on parry is a flat rate of 100, make the riposte cost 50 focus or something, with the benefit being that you get i-frames during the riposte animation. Like a backstab. That way you still have the option to use rune attacks or anything else instead of the riposte.
The only possible issue is that players may still run around to the back to backstab since it costs nothing; however, with me personally I can say that 50 focus is more than worth it to not have to run around to the enemy’s back every time. Especially with multiple enemies, where you may not have that backstab opportunity anyways.
and when u make it a unique animation or give enchantments that give buffs for using that melee riposte, then u really get the feeling of accomplishment out of parries, even as non rune, pure melee char. and people who like it as is lose nothing.
