Running the Game from the .exe instead of URL

Hello all,

When running the game from the executable file (.exe) it does launch the game but all my characters and progress do not load (it is like I opened the game for the first time). This happens even if Steam is already open. By running it from the URL shortcut, it works fine.

Every other game in steam I have doesn’t do this.

The reason I’m doing this is that I run my games from inside Kodi, and Kodi doesn’t run Games from urls only from .lnk

I know this is trivial, but any help is much appreciated!

Hi mordred,

I have tried to find out more about using kodi to launch .exe files. It seems it is not an encouraged practice do this because of a multitude of reasons, including security.

As to your issue, it looks like there is a gap between the .exe file being launched through Kodi and it not finding your save files (those are located in AppData - LocalLow - Moon Studios - NoRestForTheWicked - Datastore - 24313).

Maybe with that info you can find a solution.

Since this is a self-inflicted problem, we cannot offer you support. (Because the fix would be; stop using Kodi to launch the game)

Your best bet is finding a solution yourself, or maybe someone with enough technical knowledge can aid you by seeing your topic.

I will move your topic to General, and wish you the best of luck!

Silas

Thank you for your reply! I did not expect official support for this problem of course, just some advice! But Kodi doesn’t have to do with it. Even if you run it by the .exe it has this behavior. I just find it strange that this is the only game that does that. Every other game when running the .exe (instead of the url) opens steam and loads saved data and everything…

mordred, I misunderstood your issue it seems! I’m going to follow up on this and see if I can find out more. You will be seeing my reply soon.

Running the game from .exe will never show you your characters and Realm? Was it always like that or did it start at some point?

Hi mordred,

I would like for you to start with submitting some files, which files they are and where they can be found you can read here: How to Properly Report Bugs!

Then, I have a potential solution for you to try!

Here: All the characters have disappeared since the update - #2 by ArieBarsky

Please try that, and reply here if you have troubles or became stuck somewhere.

I would love to hear from you again when you have completed these steps as well!

Silas

Unfortunately, I did not track this behavior (I did install the game just recently to my media center). I will try the solution you proposed, but I think it will not help because the game saves do load when I run it by the url shotcut. Additionaly the same behavior does occur to my main pc also (so I do not think that there is a corrupted file that causes the “problem”). Again, thank you for your interest!

Thank you mordred for getting back at me.

I would want to ask from you that you try any troubleshooting steps only by running the steam shortcut or steam library.

If we get that version working again, only then I recommend you to use Kodi again.

Could you elaborate a little bit more on where you installed the game? How did you install it?

Silas

Hello again!

I will elaborate more with some pictures below.

So every game installed in steam creates a shortcut on desktop (a URL that points to the Steam Library and not a .lnk that points to the .exe) and a folder (with the Game data, of course) under “\Steam\steamapps\common\GameName”. In this folder is located the executable (.exe) of the game.

Fore example (CoH 3 and NRFTW)

When I run the CoH 3 executable (RelicCoH3.exe), Steam app is opening (if it is not open already) and the game runs as if I have run it normally (from the shortcut or the library), with all saved data and progress. And this happens with every game I have (or had in the past) installed in Steam app.

When I run NRFTW

From the URL shortcut or from inside the Steam app it is working fine and all the data and progress is loaded as it should.

When I execute the game from the executable (NoRestForTheWicked.exe), regardless if Steam is open or not (it doesn’t open automatically like CohH3 and all the other games) the game data and progress do not load.

It is like when you are running the .exe the game does not trigger the Steam app to load and update the Game status. See pictures below

When running NRFTW from Library or URL shortcut (working ok)

When running NRFTW from the .exe (NoRestForTheWicked.exe)

Example of Battlefield 6 executed from the .exe

\Steam\steamapps\common\Battlefield 6\bf6.exe

Example of Braid executed from the .exe

\Steam\steamapps\common\Battlefield 6\braid64_d3d11_final.exe

The pictures are taken from 2 different PCs with the exact same behavior (so I think you can recreate it easily).

Thank you!

Hello, cascaseno here :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

This has been brought up and the issue has been identified.

Apparently this has been introduced with the Unity security fix that was released, causing this specific issue when running from the EXE file.

Future updates should have this fixed. I’ll see if something can be done in the meantime. Sorry for the incovenience :folded_hands:. I’ll keep you updated.

Hello again. For the moment you’ll have to wait a bit for the next patch, which will fix this automatically.

Please, launch the game from Steam until this is fixed, don’t launch it using the exe file. The progress you do right now playing directly from the exe will most likely not carry over automatically once this is fixed, since it’s being saved under “LOCAL” and not your Steam ID.

If you already did play from the exe and want your progress moved to Steam, feel free to reach out to me on Discord (cascaseno).

Sorry for the inconvenience :folded_hands:

Thank you cascaseno and team!

No did not play “Locally” so I will wait for the next patch!
