I can’t get the timing right either
Hi,
No, my reflexes are close to 0%, I prefer to go straight ahead.
In the game, parrying at the beginning of the game is not really worth it because of the high stamina consumption at the initial levels, so it is easier to dodge the attack. But still, if you want, you can make a pretty good build with parrying using spells and weapons.
The game/physics engine is running independently from the display fps. windup/active/recovery windows are relative to the former.
The times of (mostly console and very, very old pc) broken games that tied themselves to display’s fps are thankfully long gone.
And you can verify this pretty instantly in NRftW - cap fps to 100 and to 30 and compare. You won’t suddenly get 3x+ longer parry windows (and that would include windup part as well).
This game being in early access still runs on my 65’ TCL 4k display on a 4090, 7800X3D, 64 GB RAM rig at around 70-90 fps on DLAA max settings. Plenty of time to parry, it’s just most of us suck at it.
This early access game has double the fps of some terribly optimized mess like Expedition 33 which the same rig cannot run above 60 fps and have to use vsync because otherwise the screen tearing is horrible (unlike Wicked which has no such issue with Vsync turned off), it sometimes dips below 40 because that game also has memory leaks, and it has a weapon bug with a boss that causes further fps drops as reported by users. In that game, failing a parry means getting one shot. It’s not the case with Wicked that you get one shot by anything but falling to death.
TLDR this game does not make parrying a vital mechanic to succeed, it’s still more generous with fps than many recently released games, and if a game needs tight fps optimizations for users to land parries/dodges reliably, then it’s a design/tuning issue that needs to be addressed instead, because developers can’t account for all rig permutations.
Hell, there are some users that still want to run DX11 when the first DX12 GPU released 11 years ago. Which is why deeply fps/latency reliant systems should remain optional to use and not essential to succeed.
That is very interesting. I have the complete opposite experience in every way.
Expedition 33 runs smoother for me than most modern games in recent memory. With NRFTW, I get a bunch of stutters, and lower consistent framerate. It was also crashing non-stop within 2 minutes of starting the game. The only way I got it to stop was forcing dx11. Thanks to Nvidia and their incompetent 50-series drivers.
Also if you cap the framerate in the Nvidia control panel a few below your max, and especially if you use a freesync/Gsync monitor you shouldn’t have to worry about screen tearing with or without v-sync.
After enough time playing E33, you understand the system and how parry’s happen. You have to parry almost after you get hit, and there’s always an obvious sound cue. So when you pair the sound cue with the visuals, you learn parry timings way faster. NRFTW doesn’t have this. A sound cue here would be really nice, so we would know when the attack is coming since the animations (which are visually great) are a little wild sometimes.
I don’t use a monitor, my display is my 65’ roku tv plugged into my PC, so the gsync won’t work.
E33 just runs abysmally on my system. If I wait for sound queues on Simon I am usually dead lol, especially his Light Speed attack sequence.
50-60 fps is just horrible to play with. Basically every other game runs 80-90+ fps on max settings.
With Wicked my fps drops mainly happen when I’m entering a new area or the freeze effect is going on at the same time several other vfx are.
Gaming monitors are definitely worth it. The input latency, response time, refresh rate are generally always better.
If you have a couch setup with the TV though, I respect it. What’s the refresh rate of your TV? Most TV’s are 60. There’s some that are capable of 120.
Not necessarily true. I’m max level with lower level gear and the Echo Knight one shot me.
you should check your plague resistance. a lot of armor sets mistakenly have no plague resistance
The scene that plays out in my head whenever I hear parry isn’t rewarding
Nice! Looks like someone got lucky. I’d like to see if they could keep that up the whole game.
I’ll have to check that
Exactly! Luck! 100% luck
In some situations you get lucky and pull something off, in other situations it’s skill. Most situations it’s both. What’s wrong with that? With the amount of RNG in this game luck is always involved anyways.
Also the parry was definitely not required for that over 9000 damage hit jesus. Idk what kind of bonuses/affixes they’re rocking but i need those.
Ey, while I’d take being lucky over being good any day I’d also never want to leave my success up to chance.
The 9k is echos not affixes. I should play with %damage increase on the glove but I play with parry damage and combine it with the ring cause it’s fun. I’m on the hunt for the ice ram rune and/or weapon to put in my icebreaker so I haven’t been doing echoless runs, just dps checking EK with echos to get it done quick and on to the next.
But you’re right, it wasn’t necessary for the damage; however it was for the set up. And I picked this clip for another reason as well. The dodge on P2. Should it exist? Sure why not, it’s another challenge for the player related to nothing more than game knowledge. And that’s really all parry is, and the reason why I think it’s rewarding. Don’t practice until you succeed, practice until you can’t fail! Or option three, I’m a delusional nutcase. Take your pick, all good options imo.
Lowlands mini-boss for damage reference and luck check
The three-peat
And yes I still fuck up parries, that’s why I’ll never stop practicing…
its not the best example but parrying in this game is super rewarding because of the silly busted runes
the cheapest way to output tremendous damage early on is to parry then cast a rune, repeat
it only really falls off once youre in lategame and have super powerful tanking or nuke everything. but for as long as the enemy attacks actually challenge you then its likely very good, other than maybe a few newer bosses being harder to parry
That’s not luck. That’s practice. And yes, we can keep that up the whole game.
Do we sometimes get hit ? Sure.
If you have a character with fully upgraded gear you can give that gear to a new level 1 character, as long as it has no level requirements. Then you can go into the crucible and 1 shot the Echo Knight, since the crucible scales to the player’s level, regardless of equipment.
And I agree with the fps comment. Animations in this game are heavily stylized, so there is a lot of telegraphing before an attack comes, and then like a single frame for the actual attack. So when the game runs poorly, as it does for almost everyone, you won’t even see the actual attack frame. Then parrying becomes a sisyphean ordeal, unless you’re one of those weirdos who spends hundreds of hours practicing a single mechanic until they can do it with their eyes close. But I’m almost certain people like that don’t enjoy games, they suffer from some kind of compulsion.
variable refresh rate up to 144.
I play on my sleep number reclining bed with a controller.
As cushy as a secret lab chair can be, it aint no reclining bed and I’m totally over being slumped in a desk looking at a smaller monitor.
It’s also just more comfortable to use a PS5 controller from bed.
The TV and rig work just fine with the other games even if I wanna run vsync turned off.
Wicked outside new zone stutters has been pretty damn good for an early access game.
E33 is just Unreal Engine made and unfortunately the engine wasn’t customized well for optimization.
