It is fine. We are just not good at it, yet. Maybe the window gap for successful parry could be optimized by the devs, but game just came out in early access yesterday. We are all still noobs… hahahah
Hi! Just wanted to chime in with some advice since you were asking. I’ve noticed that parrying isn’t about when you hit the button, but more about when your parry animation reaches the enemy’s attack animation. So you need to parry slightly sooner than you think. Too soon and you whiff. Too late and you get hit.
I recommend finding an enemy with attack patterns that are easily recognizable and readable, and then practice constantly until you feel comfortable with it.
I hope this helps at all!
I had the opposite experience. Compared to other soulslike games, I found I had to hit the parry button much later than I was expecting. Or to put another way, I didn’t notice any meaningful amount of parry startup frames. I have typically been using fast / small weapons, though.
Which is fine. Just different.
It’s also hard to nail down exactly what we mean when we say “a little sooner” or “a little later”, so it’s hard to describe without taking footage and analyzing frame data.
I could be entirely wrong, too, which I’m more than happy to admit.
Thank you so much. I didn’t get a lot of time to play last night so this will help for tonight!
Parry system feels really strange to me too. I was able to grasp it in Sekiro and Lies of P. But here I just can’t get it! of course every person has their own experience on how this does/should feel. But in my opinion it feels off. I’m not sure if it’s the enemy tells, the timing window, the animation lock, or what, but something feels like it needs tweaking here.
Ooo I didn’t think about this. I could change my razer key settings for mouse and keyboard. That would help for sure. I’ll try this later. Thanks for the reminder.
it’s tricky but doable. if you arent scared of dying it’s easy to learn how to do it correctly.
I actually find that this is fairly easier to engage than most Souls like games. Practice on the prologue enemies, as they are very predictable. Once you see them lift their weapon, there’s about a sec pause where you can initiate it.
Idk, I don’t use parry at all. Like it’s useless for my fast build hero. Just dodge everything. But yeah, if u playing with normal or heavy build and love parry with shield - then it’s really tricky
I definitely struggle with the Keyboard and Mouse controls. I am having great success (well, better) with an XBox controller, and am gonna try my old Stadia controller wired up directly to the PC. If you have an XBox-compatible controller, I highly recommend (at least until they figure out the M&K controls)
Thumbs down on this one, sorry. Doesn’t seem too difficult on my play through.
You’re not alone. I find parry to be extremely consistent in Sekiro and the shot in Bloodborne has a solid window. I can’t find the timing in NRftW consistently at all.
If you’re middle buttoning it on the mouse, I can see having problems.
The timing feels just right to me on the controller.
I know this is a fruitless argument, but this does not feel like a M+KB game to me.
One other thought that may help people- I have noticed that enemy attacks sometime miss ‘short.’ In which case, your parry will also miss, and you will eat the follow-up!
So, when going for a parry, I’ve found that it helps to move in to ensure they connect with you.
At least that way, you know it was on you if you miss it! Could help practice timing.
I don’t agree with this at all. I play an all dex build, and parry is extremely useful. You spend so much less stamina in fights, especially with the big enemies.
I find parrying to be quite hard, but I like that it feels challenging and that different enemy animations seem to require a different parry timing.
I’m historically bad at doing parry. The problem with this game and learning it is that you will die a lot and the repair costs will add up. I’m considering just spending some time running around with just a dagger and shield and just practice, if I die its only two items getting dinged up
Yup… This is a feedback thread, I was just giving my opinion based on early experience with the game, - not intending to open a debate about whether it’s easy or not… Which at the end of the day is subjective.
I’m sure I will Git Gud after a few more hours.
I struggle with parrying too but used the “Warrick the Torn” boss fight to practice and hone my parrying skills. I had no heals left and so used parrying as means of defeating this boss without requiring a single heal. Parrying in most games is just practice and timing so that it becomes second nature.
One person is saying that parrying is too difficult. The other is saying that it’s not. Both feedback are equally valid.
Your post on the other hand doesn’t really provide any useful feedback. You’re just criticizing other posts, which doesn’t help the devs or the discussion in any way.
Personally, I also found parrying to be difficult but that’s because I’ve never really been great at it, in any game. I can definitely say that I’ve had more successful parries in my 10th hour playing than in my first. I’m not convinced that it needs to be changed. I’d rather earn those parries through practice. It’s more satisfying that way.
