There’s a boss in the first section of the game called Warrick The Torn, and unless I’ve missed something, there’s no way for me to lower the difficulty. There’s also no way for me to grind my stats so that I can be more of a match for him. I get up to level 3 and no more. There’s also no way to customize my weapons to help me defeat him more easily, right? And no way to avoid the fight altogether. I either defeat him, or I don’t, is that correct?. And if I don’t… then I won’t be able to progress any further through the game. That is correct, isn’t it? If it is, then my game experience of NRFTW is only as long as the first section. That’s it. I’ve paid for only that much of the game. While I think NRFTW has extraordinary art and level design, and it was a joy to play right up until the game got impossible for me to beat, I don’t think that represents good value for money if I’m unable to get past Warrick the Torn. Remember, this is the beginning of the game. It’s first stage. What is easy for some might be extremely difficult for others, you’ve got to accept that as a fact, so it makes no sense why you would lock the game at that difficulty, ignoring anyone who can’t play as well as others. I don’t find the Souls-type of difficulty fun in any way, and I never have. The flower quest also felt like more of punishing chore than a fun experience.
I feel like the Devs will ignore anyone like me as a valid gamer, and that I will be mocked by the other commenters for not being able to get past the first boss. I came for the art and the level design. The exploration and the resource collecting, crafting, and leveling up. I’m forced to stop however because of the difficulty spike. What’s the final boss going to be like if I can’t get past the first one? Is it worth the extended punishing grind I would need to put into it just to enjoy the other things? What a shame.
Remember, if someone with great skills needs to grind, and finds it a challenge, then someone without those skills will need to grind for WAY longer, and find it a mundane repetitive headache., and a waste of time. Please find a way to make this work.
HI! This isn’t meant to be a criticism, mind you, but…
not all games necessarily have to be for everyone…
I suck at driving games, or platformers… even if I wanted to play them (that’s not the case), I can’t really expect the devs to distort the game as they intended, to allow everyone to play it… I’ll remain bad at platformers, I think it could be fine like this!
(and in general, I also suck at souls… so, don’t give up… create another realm, level up, and you’ll see that you’ll pass Warrick too!)
I didn’t realize starting a new realm would start the game, but keep your level.
This kind of proves my point.
Rather than go through the game twice, three times, etc, so you can level up to beat the boss, why not drop the difficulty so you only need to go through the game once? Doesn’t each playthrough the equivalent of a difficulty level???
Think about it.
Someone who goes through the game first time is like having a HARD difficulty setting.
Someone who goes through the game twice is MEDIUM.
And someone who has to go through it three or four times is EASY.
You missed a lot of area if you only got up to level 3 before the boss. Making a new realm will let you start a new world with your existing character so you can level up more.
All weapons have different move sets, so just by using a different weapon you are essentially customized your play style.
Next time you go up against the boss, don’t hit him, just dodge all of his attacks, you will learn he is very easy to dodge, then you can just hit him once and dodge away. hit dodge hit dodge hit dodge…
Gather resources, sell to Fillmore and grab some Bombs, Boss Tom can be taken out pretty easily with some well timed bombs when he slows down/sits still for a moment after heavy attacks.
Dodge accordingly in the meantime.
By grab some Bombs, I mean about 6-12 should do it depending on whether you want to direct attack him with your weapons or not.
Resources to Sell… iE ALL THE LOOT, inc Gear you find, not just mushrooms and vials. Sell the stuff that drops, buy all the bombs.
I’m at level 5 and I explored the entire map that I possibly can, all the nooks and crannies, and killing all enemies. I literally only have Warrick to defeat.
He should be easy on level 5, make sure you have a bunch of potions, and just learn his attack patterns by dodging all the moves, don’t even hit him. Once you learned his attack patterns, you will know when you will have an opening for parrying and to get your hits in. Make sure to utilize your bombs, weapon rune attacks etc to make it even easier.
Also make sure you are not wearing too much armor that makes you fat rolling. It is very easy to be over encumbered at the beginning.
First off, I love that there is a challenging first boss. If you can figure out how to handle Warrick, it means you can eventually handle anything in the game. I died to the first real boss in Elden Ring 20 times before winning but after that I felt like I could take on anything.
Secondly, did you clear the cave? Because you should be able to hit at least Lv. 4 before Warrick. The cave can be a pain but there’s no boss. Just some occasionally frustrating platforming.
Third, ranged options are your friend, especially if you struggle with melee combat. The blacksmith sells a bow. He also sells grenades. There are also two weapons you can throw before Sacrament: the axe and the climber’s pick. As long as you can regen your focus, either by getting in melee hits when you can or chugging focus vials, you can whittle his health down from a distance. Oh, and the Gnarled Staff has a fireball. At Lv. 4 with sufficient pts in INT and a full focus bar you can blast him to hell.
Fourth, no mockery here. Everyone’s first introduction to Souls-like difficulty is brutal. For me with like 300+ hrs in Elden Ring last year, I knew what I was in for. It might take you 20 tries. 50 tries. Once you pull it off though, you’ll feel pretty good about it.
You are 100% correct.
You bought a game at 90% of the price, and you will only ever get to play 10% of it.
In most souls like games you get stronger with each defeat, in this game you get weaker. Eventually you are trying to kill him naked. Something that isnt really easy to note is that I THINK you can repair for free at the blacksmith, but you are still not gaining any strengths, just less disadvantage.
With my skills and controller agility, I dont expect to ever pass The Torn.
Welcome aboard!
It’s not difficult purely for the sake of difficulty, his difficulty is to make you learn the foundation of how to fight in the game. You can get past most mobs by cheesing, just bringing them out one-by-one or abusing a rune and the same applies for Warrick. If you really wanted to you could just bomb him to death with drops, you can drink focus potions and spam runes, any fight is as hard as you want it to be through thinking and planning.
Should have done your research before buying the game. Plenty of pre-release footage showed game mechanics and combat, and the souls inspiration and difficulty was clearly evident. That’s what drew me to the game, after all.
“I should have done more research before I bought the game”
“I should try another 30 times”
How about no?
I’ve now asked for a refund. Unless they put in a story mode, then literally what’s the point? I’ve got much better things to do than perform a punishing chore over and over and over again. That might be fun for other people, but to me it’s just dull. Droll repetitive self-harm. No thank you.
its not a bad design, its just difficult for you and the other bosses will be mutch harder and you need to defeat those too to proggress with the game. the next upcoming update will give difficulty setting for the game and its called multiplayer. with co-op you can take bosses with your friends or with random people help more easily.
Nah, nothing really difficult here, game is created similiar to souls where if you cant beat something, just grind and you will beat what you cant before.
That was for me all Dark Souls games, Elden Ring and this game.
as others have said not every game is for everyone, this is a souls like game from a combat perspective, and you will need to learn how to block, dodge, parry and be patient and attack when there is an opening.
i am no a souls player and i struggle to get past the tutorial boss in the souls games but this game is a bit easier and i was able to pick it up.
if you dont like souls like games then this one isnt for you.
I’ll echo the advice a few people have given already by saying to explore and level up as high as you can, buy some bombs and flame oil from Filmore as they make the fight easier and then it’s down to learning his attacks and dodging at the right time to punish accordingly.
I’m no expert at souls like games but was happy to give this a try because like you, I really liked the art design and story premise but unlike you it seems, I really really enjoyed the fact that the combat challenged me so much. I stuck at it, put in the time required to learn and level and it has been really satisfying.
At the end of the day, if you’re not having fun then it’s probably not the game for you and refunding and moving on is likely best. Least you gave it a go
