How much repeatable side content does it seem you're meant to do before continuing main content?

I haven’t played any massive amount yet.
So far the extent of my main progression has simply been to reach the city and meet the npcs inside it.

Since then, my play sessions so far have consisted of logging in, pickup up dailies/weeklies from the Captain, and backtracking to the beach, keep, and forest to complete the dailies/weeklies located in those areas. Then closing out the session having not moved forward any.

Is that something this game expects to do any particular amount?
Am I liable to move forward into the next main progression area and find myself overpowered because I progressed my character too much in repeatable content?
Am I liable to move forward and find myself underpowered because I haven’t done enough repeatable content first?
Or would I eventually notice the game is one that casts aside the premise of progression by scaling all the enemies so being weaker/stronger isn’t something you can actually do?

Those quest are more for farming material than for level up.
You can see the recommended level when you enter in a new area.
But the main thing that will make you feel overpowered or underpowered is more your build than your level.
The previous area will increase in difficulty but by stage according to story progression (if I remember well).

I played my first playthrough exactly how you did, moving very slowly with every questline and backtracking a lot to explore everything as much as possible.

I would be mindful of not burning yourself out with just the daily routine of those challenges/bounties, other than that keep upgrading your gear as much as possible to the extent you’re able to.

Right now you can get underpowered but overpowered is really hard to do at first, especially if you don’t know much about builds etc yet!

Have fun doing it the way you want  .

I leveled a new chatacter as well after the together update and I found myself being underpowered and low level very often. I don’t remember if I was locked of continuing the main story because of level but if that happened to you then it is really a signal that the story progression is off. Being locked from the main story is very bad progression design.

They definitely changed how enemy scale and the amount of experience you get from the main story in a bad way.
