Yeah, no, having to run around to hunt for food, and then cook said food in a lengthy animation per dish, between attempts at a difficult section/boss is annoying, unnecessary, boring and the complete opposite of a fun experience.
Give me a basic estus flask that
- re-fills on death
- only heals HP
Cooking could be a cool addition to get one-time heals that also add some beneficial effect.
Bit of background:
- As I write this, I have just arrived at the first boss and gotten my ass handed to me a couple of times (that’s fine ).
- I played and loved Dark Souls, Elden Ring, Jedi Fallen Order. I played Bloodborne and liked the combat but absolutely hated vial farming. The food gathering is even worse than blood vial farming
- I am myself surprised at how strongly I feel about this. Must be because the food-system-design feels so jarring next to the exceptionally cool designs for other systems in the game. For instance the “fog of war” system that eliminates the “run back” to a challenging foe, but still makes the map feel alive.
