Two-handed is terrible experience vs swarm

Have the devs played Two-handed swords against the final flying bosses (I can’t even get past their minions with 2-hander)? I think not. It’s a horrible fight. I don’t want to cheese it with some kick runes but apparently that’s what we need to do.

The final fight, actually the minions even are a terrible experience with two-handed swords. The animations are super slow, even WITH animation cancelling. I hit one enemy then immediately hit by another. Forget the rune attacks, tried all 3 2-handers I have and they are interrupted. I’ve even timed a charged attack and landed in a group of 5 of them and HIT NONE. Why? I’m guessing 1 of the 5 did their jump back to avoid and I still missed every single one of them.

For the record the fight was fair with fists and easy with staff (yes you need to tune DOWN staves), yes I have completed the campaign with 2 other characters already. The first basic attack with some of the two-handers are laughably bad against a swarm like that.

Don’t underestimate well used 2H weapons in melee context. Especially when paired with parrying (and both bosses as well as trash birds can be parried) and quick high damaging runes.

That aside, you have 3+3 weapon slots … use one for smaller weapon ? After hotfix2’s dumbing down, trash birds micro-stagger pretty easily.

Final bosses I can see parrying, not sure about the trash birds. I’ll try it but I doubt it will help. I mean parry one then get hit by another? Seems futile. And the quick high damaging runes? You mean NON 2-hander runes like the kick runes? Again that’s cheese, IMO. If there is a quick 2-handed rune, please divulge because the 3 2-handers I have are NOT quick and are getting interrupted.

I don’t want to cheese it using a different weapon type. I think that defeats the purpose of playing a 2-handed. Like I said, the fight was super easy with staff and fair with fists. I did not have issues with the rest of the bosses using 2-handed.

Not sure what else to say. Level 23, 600 armor, 220ish health, 50 str. Just not a fun fight. The rest of the game as a 2-hander WAS fun to be clear.

msoltyspl is saying that you have three slots for weapons, if a fight is proving challenging with your two hander, try equipping a faster weapon in one of the other slots.

If you can get your hands on a Summer’s Sting, that has a fast running attack, long enough recovery but pokes fast.

I beat the whole game with a two-handed sword including the eco knight at max pestilence level and without sublime items. Build, right items and runes make the difference. I have no idea why many have difficulty with the double flying boss, personally he is the only one I beat on the first try with much lower equipment than what I have now

My friend also had the experience that the last fight was the hardest using 2h.

Watched him really struggle on a second start trying daggers and realized he was carried hard by the 2h damage able to trade damage and heal to kill most bosses. There is skill to using 2h, which I didn’t posses so went with 1h and shield despite first boss dropping the claymore for me first time playing.

There’s a reason 2h are popular, there should be some challenges with them- it seems that fight is one of them where it makes you git gud, no need to nerf it in my opinion.

No, I understand, I’ve already defeated it with two other characters using faster weapons.

I just don’t think I should have to switch to another class of weapon to defeat that encounter. To me there is something fundamentally wrong with either the encounter or the weapon or combat itself.

I don’t want to cheese it with axe throw or some martial arts. I don’t want to have to go find some unique 2- hander either. This is the campaign, not the end game.

I’m asking for the devs to try it themselves and see if they think it’s balanced using 2-hander moves. If the answer is to switch to staff and freeze them all then please don’t reply.

its maybe to do with move sets? personally i had been using the claymore but struggled with that on the bird swarm. i ended up switching to a scythe to use its opening wide sweep attack to hit multiple birbs at once and that was much better.

i feel like having a weapon switch, 1 with trusty single target pokes and another with wide aoe swings is a fine mechanic to play around so long as you can get access to both move set styles on the same main stat(wich you can).

the 2h have a higher dps than the 1h at the expense of the attack speed. if you bring the base attack speed equal to that of the 1h then you would make the 1h useless.
this game is already totally unbalanced, asking for it because you don’t want to use objects/runes makes no sense..however if you only want to use basic attacks it is still possible to set the character on attack speed, stamina and damage increase.
before the breach on that side it was much easier to build something like this and certainly there was much more variety of builds

Hello everyone,

My main character uses 2H weapons, and I can understand the issue. In reality, there are some very competent 2H weapons, but at the same time, many are clearly ineffective when used in the game’s most challenging fights (and those are the ones that really matter). If you try out different 2H weapons, you’ll notice that several of them have no opening animation that takes less than 2 seconds—and this, combined with the inability to cancel animations, really hinders their use.

That’s why 2H players tend to favor weapons whose movesets include at least one agile attack.

These handicaps, along with the loss of stat bonuses and an extra rune by forgoing an off-hand, are what hold 2H weapons back. In my opinion, and to compensate for this, 2H weapons should have the unique ability to cancel charged attacks.

100% agree and is basically what I’m getting at. The reason I have three different two handers is because I was looking for precisely that. I was even trying the rune attack from corpse smear that is an arcing attack but I was getting interrupted constantly. That was with heavy armor and poise potion…against ‘trash mobs’.

Your main opponent is the camera in this fight

I’m not asking to bring base attack speed to 1h. I’m asking for the VERY limited 2-handed rune attack moves to not be interrupted when a mob sneezes on me or at least add more 2-handed rune attacks. There are VERY few in case you haven’t checked.

I shouldn’t have to use non 2-handed rune attacks to cheese the game. Sorry. I’m not asking them to dumb it down. The encounter is fine with the other weapons I have played so far. I’m not even talking about the two guys, I’m talking about the 8 trash mobs that swarm you in the beginning of the encounter.

Although there are some bosses that simply jump back as soon as you charge your attack, EVERY SINGLE TIME, which is a bit annoying…

I’m not talking about the double flying boss. What runes are you using in the two-handed sword for the swarm? What level were you when attempting?

Because most vids I’ve seen are people cheesing it with kick flip and other martial arts. That’s not two-handed sword.

First boss was first try, at level 3. Darak was first try too. I’m not sure why you had problems with those and then magically the last boss was easy. I smell Gouda.

theres plenty that could be done rather than removing animation commit on 2hander charge attacks imo.

for example, there currrently aren’t any enchantments that modify charge attacks specifically.
they could add enchantments(or gems?) such as(just spitballing heer)

gain X poise while charging an attack

X% increased charge attack speed

gain X% retaliation if staggered while charging an attack

I use lighting strike because of its animation, the kick rune is literally op and shows once again that the developers are doing random things without testing them. However, the game when you know what the best weapon is, with the best runes and with all the buffs you can have from potions/food/runes always becomes a one button.
the game is challenging only in the early stages and if you have never played it.
now everyone asks to have access to more materials when in reality (obviously I am at the maximum level you can reach in the game and I am not talking about lvl cap) I do not collect anything anymore… I only do crucible run, I sell everything I find and I buy everything from merchants.

Are you using enough poise gear?

I feel the opposite.

2H weapons often have long reach, and long reach is very useful in handling groups of mobs, since you can poke them from more safety.

The difficulty comes when the actual boss lands and then calls his lieutenant, because if the sideboss decides to be aggressive at the same time you just dodged all of the main boss’s wing stomps or swoops, then you lose any opportunity to punish and DPS the main boss out so you can deal with the lieutenant.

If the intended strategy is to deal with the lieutenant first, then they need to drastically reduce his HP, because he legit has the same HP as the main boss or close to it.

But in either case, weapons with longer reach are an advantage over low range fist weapons or tiny little daggers and swords with no reach, or god forbid a staff.

I don’t think one is meant to be lesser than the other, they just stagger them to give the player a chance to get used to the concept of the fight even if there is some variance between their attacks, and give you a chance to get some damage in on the first one. (Therefore a prime target once the other lands). If you have a strong build/good at parry you can even kill the first one before the second manages to land making the fight FAR more manageable.

I think some of these ideas could be useful. You would need to be careful it doesn’t turn the weapon into essentially a 1-handed sword (which I think is kinda what leonardo did with his rune attack).

yeah, so that was my point. I know you can get some over powered runes that ‘fix this’. But lightning strike is from a different class of weapon if I recall. I think 2-handed swords should have something from one of their easy to obtain weapons that would work in this scenario. It doesn’t have to be OP or best in class…just useable.

And I 100% think some rune attacks need to be nerfed. If it becomes a 1 button affair then you’ve kinda killed the heart and soul of this game, IMO.

Fair question. I tried using heavy armor and poise potion. Seemed to have zero effect, but maybe there is some threshold I need to hit…
