The game is great — the controls aren’t

I think the game has a good difficulty level, but I find it fiddly to control with mouse and keyboard. I’ve played for approx 15 hours now, and it has gotten better as I’ve gotten more used to playing this way, but I still miss better mouse-and-keyboard support. What kills me isn’t the game itself, but the clumsy mouse and keyboard controls.. Other than that, the game is very good. Maybe you should add something like WASD + mouse like PoE 2 does it? It feels like playing the piano when playing NRFTW (No Rest For The Wicked.) And that feels kinda bad.

Actually, the M+K combo is even better than controller. That is because there are plenty of settings you can customize that can allow for confort.

If you have issues with moving in a more controlled way, rebind the “move to mouse” button to something more confortable.

You can both use the RUN key alone (it will follow the mouse if you don’t use WASD buttons, that if used will bypass the mouse pointer as a movement direction point) that will allow for auto-jumps to where the mouse is, and the “walk to mouse” button to move with more precision… both will allow you to achieve a lot.

I am doing that and i am using the first of the 3 settings you can use (i guess it’s the default one?).

There are things definitely to improve.

Shifting through main hand, off-hand, to player skills/runes should be different. Even from default, run and dodge, or whatever it is, is on the same button. Already a thing to change.

You can bind a key to hold to cast your own spells, which helps, but still.

Also, can’t still figure out how to use placement in housing, it’s really bad. On PC, why not just have object moved with a mouse, and scroll to rotate, ctrl+scroll to snap to 45 degrees angles, and click to place. Why overcomplicate.

I usually use this tactic:

  1. I get the direction i wish the item to be placed into
  2. Use the “item lock” button so the item will move WITH ME and my character doesn’t turn around
  3. I then make micro movements to place it exactly where i want.

So far, it works.. i completely filled our house without issues in that way.

I noticed i could do that on my gamepad so maybe theres a chance keyboard and mouse has it but you just need to find the button for it?

Its for certain not mappable i guess but it might be bound?

Just a side tip when you are placing multiple things of the same kind you can use the one you have already placed as reference point if you for example want to have it next to the other with same rotation.(No need to answer just a tip you do you)

I do the same, but it is, again, overly complicated, really really bad. It should be much simpler.

Yup, i understand. Still i think it can be much simpler on PC. I know game is basically made for gamepads, and is good with it, but still, a little love there for PC users would be nice

Less is more. It took me about 22 hours to feel even somewhat comfortable with mouse and keyboard in NRFTW. That alone could scare M&K players away after just 1–2 hours of playtime, leading them to refund the game or stop playing because the system feels “complicated.” That said, after 22 hours I’ve definitely grown more accustomed to it.

For the first five hours, I was fighting the controls. The next five hours, I was fighting both the controls and the enemies. After that, things gradually started to improve—then improve more. Still, even after 22 hours, it could be better.

It felt a bit like learning to play the piano: rewarding in the long run, but not always fun along the way.

But I actually like it when I can use the right mouse button to run whenever I want to give my keyboard fingers a rest (keyboard-finger pain). – But a more simple system should be there as a defualt setting = less piano on the keyboard. But still keep WASD + right mouse button for movement.

I’ve also gotten really used to the Run/Dodge on the spacebar(so please do not remove), and toggle to run. It makes the game less piano-like for me. Just holding spacebar when I want to save up some stamina before attacking.

You could always check by pressing exactly every single key on your keyboard :joy::+1:

I agree, they shouldn’t revamp the whole movement, it’s just small things, make it a bit simpler.

So you want placing to be more complex like sims?(Similar)

The more complex the housing system is the more simple it is to use.

When the housing system has a simple design it is indeed more complicated to use and can become a pain for those who want to place their furniture and stuff where it is “just right” .

What? Please read what i’ve said, i don’t want to repeat my self, or explain.

How is me saying “it should be simpler” in your mind is “i want it more complex” ???

Stick to discussion please. This is about PC M+D controls.

After thinking a bit more about mouse + keyboard controls for managing the character in the game, and given that this is a kind of Souls-like game. I’ve been reflecting on what actually makes the game good. I feel that the core of the game is about being good at dodging attacks: dodge-rolling, carefully crouching over obstacles, creeping along walls, planning attacks and managing stamina.

The current system with WASD + right mouse button for movement, combined with dodging on the spacebar and sprinting toggled on another key, feels good. However, what the developers really should do is simplify the use of Runes and keyboard shortcuts. It quickly becomes overwhelming when you have to use CAPS and other additional keys just to activate runes. I think this is where the main bottleneck lies.

I’ve read quite a few reviews on Steam after the latest patch, and some players don’t like the current keyboard + mouse controls. But as I said, if this system is just refined a little bit, I think we’ll be there.

The issue lies with the fact that many people play games without owning a gaming mouse with enough ammount of buttons.. i barely use the keyboard, like 90% of the buttons are on my mouse.

There are plenty of mouses out there, even in the range of 15-30€ that have like 20 buttons or something like that (and no, i am not talking about the MMORPG style with 50 buttons on the side of the mouse).

Take in exame my Roccat Tyon.. it allow me to use almost everything from it.

The “scheme”, to sum up, is an issue for those that doesn’t have a gaming mouse with at least 10 buttons (and i mean really 10 bindable buttons, excluding left and right buttons).

M+K support is important Twitch

Why would anyone play a game like this with kb + m

Seems awful.

The customization of the controls is fine (I’ve played 3-4 hours with m+kb), but I find it hard to figure out how the inputs (including the mouse controls) translate into movement. My largest number of deaths is due to taking mortal fall damage after my character launched off a cliff on one of the frequent ledges that require movement accuracy to navigate them.

Particularly turning is weird. My character frequently drops off cliffs when navigating sharp turns, and I haven’t figured out what the correct input should be.

Actually movements are MORE precise with M+K than controller, it just require a bit more skills to use (AND maybe having somehow the option to unlink run+jump would help as well).

That is because we can make the character move TOWARD the mouse cursor, by holding down the RUN or WALK buttons.

But since the RUN is linked to JUMP, to avoid launching you down every edge, don’t use the RUN action to move everywhere and always.

I have the RUN bound to SHIFT and the WALK to ALT. I use the combination on both based on what i have to achieve.

I have tested the movements against a controller (used by one of our team mates) and i am largely faster and more precise with movements (due to the fact that the mouse can do a rapid change of angle anytime anywhere compared to the controller that require a bit of delay), also with M+K i can make INSTANT turns compared to controller by simply moving on the other side of the character, while a controller need some delay.
