[Resolved] Friendly fire in souls like game is ridiculous

Do you know how wide is the attack window of a scythe?

My friends will be all dead one step out of Sacrament.

Friendly fire brings nothing but disadvantage to users in souls like game.

Especially when the size of enemies is small and melee build is a thing.

If this is a FPS game while everyone is using a range weapon, I get it.

But a souls like game? No.

Does the game not punishing enough?

If you want players to be able to interact with each other’s character like doing some pranks, you could just learn from Cloudheim - provide an option that user can turn it on or off.

it makes sense when friendly fire is for both players and enemies, so you cant just jump 4 scythe on a poor thing, you have to choose roles for fights, making frontline and backline strategies or just take turns with others to deal melee damage. sounds viable :owl:

going to have to jump in here on the disagree wagon - friendly fire makes you rethink the attack.

if with a random person, we saw our buildws and figured out who goes in first, draws attention and who comes around the back side for a few attacks

i like it

I personally like that friendly fire makes you think about your actions. I am playing with 1-2 other friends and we are actively weaving in and out of combat or calling out bigger spells. It’s more strategic and fun. Otherwise we would all be in the button mashing and stun locking everything on the screen.

I think the idea of friendly fire is very good, and it will work well for people who are in live communication with each other.

But if you don’t have a microphone or don’t want to be live talking while playing all the time, it becomes a burden.

fair but..

if someone is built like a tank, chances are they will engage first to get the enemies attention

ranged folks sit in the back and take shots when there is an opening

the other damage dealers, will have to figure out a routine that works for them

been running a few games with zero live comms, let the flow evolve

I agree that some friendly fire is fun and adds thinking

However, currently it does WAY too much damage. With a decent weapon you 1-shot your friend/random person.

I suggest capping it at chip damage (highest being 5% of total life pool)

Friendly fire is a VERY good thing!!! It forces the team to work together, plan strategy and organise themself.

Have you ever seen co-op combat in Elden Ring? Friendly fire is THE one thing that’s missing from it: if you wanna PvP as an invader, you’ll likely get welcomed by 4 suckers that will just spam whatever strongest spell they got: you have absolutly no freaking chance for an actual combat, you just get slaughtered as soon as you spawn. All you get to see is a freaking massive hellish firework, and you die in less than a second without having a chance to do anything: it’s the entire reason why most people don’t bother invading and would rather be invaded. If Elden Ring had friendly fire, PvP would certainly be a lot more fun.

Maybe allowing a “warning” hit could be the solution: a first hit that doesn’t deal damage but only interupt your action and built some stagger. Then introduce a countdown like 30 seconds before resetting the warning hit: during those 30 seconds you do get damage if you’re not careful. I think that’d be fair.

Another thing you could think about is sharing the damages: if you hit your friends you both get damage from it: that way poeple WILL be careful. It’s actually unfair to get killed by friendly fire from a dude that doesn’t have to face consequences. I’d go as far as saying some people won’t hesitate to make it a strategy to keep the loot for themself. It’s too easy to pretend it was an accident. If a team player keep spaming attacks without consideration for his team mates, then he’ll die first from his own behaviour. I played enough Elden Ring to know how people truly behave in co-op. Make it an option if you’re affraid that’ won’t be popular.

Don’t you guys think it’s even more reasonable for the devs to add a toggle? After all these diverse perspectives?

I mean it’s just a problem all over preference. Not some core mechanic like limiting re-roll on enchantments. (I think that’s even worse)

As long as we have a toggle, you happy, I happy.

So guys! Let’s hope the devs will add a toggle!

Big disagree, it adds a lot of immersion though they should probably think of ways of balancing it with quiver explosions. I guess you could just take off the quiver. Also I wish there was a way to speed them up because they feel too much like throwing a bomb and makes it harder to coordinate with a close dps.

Having options for players is never a bad thing.
I like the idea of adding a toggle option, adjusting the damage percentage, or altering friendly fire to a knockback or something less lethal.

I’m all for friendly fire to a certain degree, but I agree with the OP that many weapons have a massive hit box. It limits the builds that players can use, often restricting one player to ranged while the other is melee.

If that’s the preferred setup for a duo, great. But there will be many players who want to experiment with different builds, the majority of which are melee or AOE spells, especially as you get into late game.

I basically had to alter my playstyle to thrust-style single target weapons to even make playing with my brother viable. It was fun to play together, but even in the early game it felt overly punishing and drastically limited our build options.

I just came up with an idea

I’m gonna craft 999 bombs and randomly join realms

I’m so ready for the co op update :fire::fire::fire:

Are you in the Discord by any chance? If not, here is an invite!

Find a piece of gear that hasn’t been infused with a gem yet.

Lmk, will find a screenshot

And that is why, it should be an option. For you to feel like it is more realistic and enjoy the game, and the person above to also enjoy it with his friends.

I play ARPGs with my daughter and wife. If i have a chance to accidentally kill them there is no way we can play this game. Ill look into trying when friendly fire can be disabled

So many weapons have a wide range of attack and if another is using a bow too it’s impossible to not get hit, everyone saying “just coordinate bro” isn’t helpful, combat is so chaotic especially with 4 people it just feels bad right now. Just have friendly fire as an option, don’t force it on us

I don’t think they are unwilling to add an option to disable it, but they are UNABLE to.

Like it’s a core mechanic which cannot be removed. Like technically.

It’s programmed to work that way in the first place, for both enemies and players.
