There is not enough gameworld available to support the whole “harvest your own upgrade materials” thing. THERE ARE TWO SILVER NODES ON THE MAP.
And how many birch?
It’s a joke, currently.

Yes, that is because it’s gated behind content not released yet.
However, you can create as many realms as you want and the general goods vendor upgraded to tier 3 will on occasion sell both silver ore and silver ingots. I have 5 realms in total but most importantly you don’t need all of these upgrades. Sure, they are nice but amour upgrades are just so expensive that I don’t think you should do them at the moment, what is it, 10 silver ingots for 1/3 of a level. You can do fine without that for the time being.
Great, so let’s undo the vendor change until the map is fuller.
I’d imagine it’s more helpful to the devs if our power level is where it should be, eg not fully decked up in max upgrades.
Our power level is still pretty OP even without some measly silver upgrades.
Yeah but it sort of made harvesting and refining materials pointless. So, I get why they did make the change. I don’t really feel that I’m suffering for it, rather it makes me pay a little bit more attention to ore and stuff.
Then again. I’m currently doing a no food/barehanded only playthrough. So… yeah.
These are 1st world problems, “I want everything now!”
