NPC dialog system

The devs put a lot of love and effort in creating many unique NPCs walking around the city. They all have different skins, pathing, personality and lore which is amazing.

I believe many players like myself have spent quite some time talking to every single one of them to get every bit of NRFTW lore we can from them.

Problem:

  • For some reason, NPC dialogs require the player to press the “Talk” button several times before they tell you everything they have to say, opening 1, 2, 3 or even more “Talk bubbles”.
  • The player can never tell if the NPC is done talking or not, which is why, at the moment, we keep pressing the “Talk” button until the said NPC repeats the same sentence over and over again which breaks the immersion in my opinion.

Suggestion:

  • When talking to an NPC, give the player two options : “Keep talking” button or “Exit” to stop the dialog bubble.
  • The “keep talking” button will let the NPC talk until he is done and really has nothing new to say.
  • When walking around the world, add a little indicator on the NPC to let the player know that the NPC has something to say that we have never heard before (Could be something shiny over the NPC’s shoulder or under his feet)

NRFTW Lore is so good and this way, players will be able to make sure they have collected all the information they can from all those unique NPC. It will also prevent them from talking over and over again to an NPC that has nothing new to say.

What do you guys think ?

It’s important that it’s not intrusive, and that there’s an option in the game to disable it, I don’t reread the dialogue for every new character and I don’t want all the npc’s walking around with glowing icons.

100% agree with you.
Here is another suggestion I have in mind:

Change the color / shape of the “Talk” button that pops when we walk by an NPC with unread dialog.
It solves both problem at the same time !

It would be fun if NPC’s would go around and leak or reference upcoming content to the game which they probably already do to some extent.

Yes, that’s already the case ! Many NPC tell you about the places where they used to live or work like Havenport or Tir for example
