Narrative inconsistency: Madrigal Seline's Keepers (bodyguards) fail to discharge their duty

Would like to preface this first by saying after 250 hours in, Wicked is the game I have spent the most hours on, and something that I gotten myself immersed into - the world, the lore, the story and have been loving it! Thank you Moon Studios for this game!

After going through the story with different characters (about 4 so far) I can’t help but notice the dissonance I have to keep in my mind in order to maintain my suspension of belief in the story. Let me explain:

Ultimately, Seline’s Keepers fail to discharge their duty at the most important hour

What do I mean by this?

Throughout the campaign we are first introduced and continuously reinforced with the idea that Seline has her own bodyguards that sticks with her, protects her, operating separately from the Inquisition’s enforcers.

Here they are first introduced when the Inquisition arrived at Sacrament - closely guarding Seline against Odessa:

Then again we see them at the mountain gate during the course of the campain always in near vicinity of Seline:
Upon arriving at the Mountain Gate:

After killing the Riven Twins (the first two):

(the other two just right outside the chamber):

When breaching the gate:

They are always in close proximity to her and react to any threats posed to her.
Their discipline (displayed through their unchanging posture and silence), alongside their full suit of armor, tells me Seline is very well-protected.

Here comes the problem:

When the Inquisition finally broke the gate down, we see Seline enter the tunnel with two of her Keepers right behind her in the cutscene:

Barring the cinematic inconsistency that they suddenly have shields and 1H swords when they have been using 2H swords thus far (inconsistent because at Caylen they have their 2H swords again), the other two is nowhere to be seen.

In a dramatic fashion, it is revealed to us shortly after in the cutscene they were way outside the gate in the main area, now rushing to go protect their Madrigal, fighting through the Winged Brood:

Why? Why were they so far away from the person they were trying to protect? It is not explained to us why were they so far away from Madrigal (not even at the mouth of the gate but in the central area where we fight the Winged Brood). For them to be so consistent with their actions up till now, only for them to to leave her side at the most crucial moment, pulls me from the immersion into the story.

At first their dramatic entrance and cool fighting scenes distracted me but I think it is inconsistent with their character that has been established by the story.

I could guess that maybe early on it was a creative decision to have a big fight with the Seekers and Winged Brood to display the Seekers’ prowess. But after the dust has settled, I only feel a ‘Eh? That was weird they were so far behind Seline’. I think including the fighting scene whilst added more ‘Oomph’ to the action, driving up the tension, it only subtracts from the cohesive, coherent storyline you guys Moon Studios have established with Wicked.

Suggestion: Use Bainbridge instead

It is a shame Bainbridge get killed off so early by Speaker Lucian.

And to be honest, also hard to believe the leader of the royal guards, who would probably be at the top of martial prowess amongst the guards, could not fight through two Inquisition enforcers and accepted his fate so readily:

It would be cool to see him in action and quite consistent with his character to try to save everyone (inlcuding his guards) from the Winged Brood:

Let’s say he fought free from the enforcers and knocked the Speaker and his two lackeys out, then at the time when a protector is needed the most, he appears where the 2 Seekers originally were, and fights off the Winged Brood. Then all 4 Seekers can then be positioned with Seline as she makes her way to Caylen, making the Seekers’ characterisation and overall narrative consistent/coherent.

Bainbridge can then be a character that can then follow up on the loose ends of what will happen to House Bolein, now that breaching the gate has caused everything to descend into chaos.

Having him being in conflict with the Inquisition as he has defied his death sentence, and navigating how to still lead his guards or escape court martial (perhaps by escaping into Caylen? a lone wolf exploring Caylen kinda thing? We can meet him in different places of Caylen, reflecting/echoing our observations about this cursed city) will be very interesting as well.

If you are still here, thanks for reading all the way! Credits to Indie James for his Wicked playthough as I did not record any of my gameplay and it would have been exhausting to re-run the campaign just to get screenshots.

Once again, thank you Moon Studios for this amazing game! Really looking forward to what you guys are cooking for the rest of it!!
