How does the damage works?

Been currently playing on a experimental branch with a couple of friends and its been so much fun so far, but i feel that my friend (which is using spells/mage build) has stronger damage options than heavy two hand weapons (which is what i like to use).

Since the start of the game i have been using the yellow greatsword that the first boss drops and already feel weaker than my friends but didnt care much since i loved taking a time to deal a heavy blow (which would not kill almost any enemy).

But now i heading toward the end game and i am feeling so much weaker. I cannot take a group of enemies without suffering, even worse when they dont use weapons, making the parry a harder option, while my mage friend just explode 3 enemies at once and i could get a single blow (which when i get it, still doesnt kill anyone).

I also noticed that some weapons have more damage on stats but do less damage on real enemies and i couldnt find why this would happen.

Could a kind soul please help me poiting out what im doing wrong with my build please

Just skimming this could be a difference of enemy resistances; physical with armor, elemental, etc. Though a level 9 weapon at near max level isn’t going to do much damage, you need to rank that up.

(Also if you are talking about plagued areas and you are burning offerings to increase difficulty be VERY sure to read those negative effects. They can get really brutal and quickly put you in a position of every fight being effectively a boss fight.)

I don’t play magic users, but in general, yes, magic will do more damage up front because it requires Focus. You have to build into Focus to not quickly run out. Your melee weapons effectively will never run out. You may need a few seconds now and then to regain stamina, but compared to a magic weapon… well, you can’t just equip any magic thing and instantly be wrecking things. It takes a lot of synergy.

Yes, magic things are often great at AE, and playing in a tankish style will be more problematic against a few ranged guys. Once weapon based skill comes in, and classes, it will be a lot easier to make hybrid builds. But for now, while it would do complete garbage damage compared to your friend, if you are REALLY struggling you might want to look at magic weapons and swap to it as a secondary when you really need to. See how that works out in areas you feel short. Don’t respec anything, just take a thing with a penalty because you never know how well that might work for what your build is short in.

Like with my main build, which I’m calling a Knight, I’m effectively a tank build, but when I absolutely need to stay at range, or don’t have time to eat and need to quickly build Focus, I’ll swap to the starter bow and take a few shots at range. It’s garbage damage at like 15 a hit compared to like 75 of my main weapon, but again, for some fights you really just want to be ranged, or need to thin out a pack. (Like the one boss with the bull that creates slow fields I had to do that fight almost entirely at range with the basic bow with no dexterity because I just couldn’t move enough to melee.)

No Rest For The Wicked is its own thing. (And again, when weapon levels and classes come in and stats are removed it will change again.) Don’t think in a traditional role, think about what you are having issues with, and consider if there is a way around it. You can use any weapon regardless of the stats, it just won’t be great without the stats, but if it helps cover a shortcoming, then adapt.

Also NRFTW will NEVER be about building up to clear screens of enemies with a push of a button. You SHOULD be worried fighting a ā€œgroup of enemies.ā€ Especially with a melee heavy build you really don’t want to exceed 3 little guys at once, and if an elite is in the group, probably just the elite and 1 other. More you REALLY need to pay attention, focus, move around, keep tabs on who is attacking how and be careful. Your friend may be able to wade into a group and be ok, but he’s not going to be able to do it very long solo. He’s going to pretty quickly run out of Focus. Again, I don’t play mages, but from what I’ve seen you have to heavily optimize for it.

And remember, they are just getting started. More weapons, runes, etc, will be added as time goes on. I think they already mentioned Crossbow is in the works.

Don’t forget too, each weapon has its own move set and timing. Maybe the weapons you are using aren’t the best for your playstyle. Again, try things out, especially just around town you can swing weapons around and see if you like the move set and timing of attacks.

Thx for your help bunny man!

While i was waiting some answer here i tried some changes. For now, i am using a heavy axe that is really fast and focused it with burn and now i am able to manage better fights, but the idea of having a cool big heavy sword exploding enemies still haunts me.

Searched some youtube videos and forums for someone who actually made a working pure strength heavy sword build but all i could find were elemental ones and silly runes that uses your butt to one hit smash enemies.

I will still be on the look for some cool dream build and when the time comes i might share with others in need.

While it’s not guaranteed you could try gemming the thing with lightning. That will pretty often branch out and sometimes cast explody bolts.

Personally I’m more a fan of fire, but I think in my entire time leveling up my main I’ve only found 1 fire gem for weapons. :frowning: (Just earlier today hit max 30.)

There are a couple of AE attacks greatweapons can do (again, fan of fire, so if I go greatsword I give it the fire slam), but really the ā€˜I want to hit a lot of things at once’ is the realm of magic weapons. Melee things focus more on high damage to single target.

I’d say if you want to search youtube check out stuff by Larry Puss (he has a cute animated cat.)
