Game unplayable on eGPU

Hi guys,

For some reason the game is basically unplayable when using eGPU, the game uses the eGPU (100% usage) but never goes to more than 30fps, I already tried multiple O.S. installs and every time the result is the same, low fps with high GPU usage, that being said i only had this issue with no rest for the wicked so here is my report and as instructed the “How to properly report bugs page” here is the link to the request files, if there is any kind of workaround plz let me know so i can test.

Things that i already tried: Clean Windows install, multiple driver versions, force Rebar off/on with Nvidia profile inspector (changing in game settings also don’t reproduce any kind of change).

Specs: I5-13420h, 32gb, Rtx 3050 (laptop’s GPU that is now turned off over device manager), nvme ssd and a RTX 5060 as eGPU over thunderbolt 4.

PS: i already saw other posts on reddit pointing to same problem with completely different setups when trying to use an eGPU, and the performance is normal when played on the laptop’s dGPU.

Hm tough situation, thanks for reporting Nicanaue.

Most likely this is on poor optimization within the game, even if it has system requirements it is probably crossing that line in a couple of area’s.

I am also interested in those reddi threads, any solutions or suggestions posed there?

No, i haven’t found any kind of tip or workaround, what makes me think it’s some kind of “bug” is the fact that it runs worst on the eGPU (5060) than in the iGPU (3050) so here I’m reporting this issue to you.

PS: if there is any kind of test there i can do help you find the culprit I’d be happy to it.

hey there,

on first glance I would assume, that thunderbolt does not have enough bandwidth to fully use the eGPU. Additionally I do not know how response times are with external GPUs. I could imagine, that depending on the system setup it could cause timeouts.

At first glance I doubt that a bug is causing this. Some Games (and other software) might be more susceptible to timeout errors than others, but all in all it sounds like a hardware issue to me rather than a bug in the game.

Is there any way you could share your system logs? maybe the team can find issues there?

You are totally correct but while i do see i lower performance than the “normal” for this GPU no game has showed a similar behavior (not even bringing the resolution down to 1280x600 shows any kind of change on the performance), like i play multiple games on this laptop with this setup and every single one of them works fine for instance i get 70+ fps in bf6 before frame gen and around 60+ on Crimson Desert without frame gen (no ray reconstruction) so for now i don’t see how it could be a hardware issue (temps also look fine on the CPU and GPU).

And as request here are the requested files: No Rest eGPU

I have completely the same problem

Anyone? If there is any additional log/file that i can provide to help to solve this issue, please say I’ll gladly provide it.

Where some troubleshooting pointers are given, might that help?

I just noticed a common trend on other forums where people with eGPU has had similar problems in other unity games until it just worked after they changed from windows 11 to windows 10 or linux.

However on Windows 11 I recommend checking on some other forum if there are any windows 11 security features that might be conflicting with the eGPU or Unity Games or a mix of them both.
