what is all this about? an easier world won’t affect you and me in any way, so what’s the problem with adding it so more players can enjoy the game?
Yes this does not affect me directly but I want everyone to have a good experience with the game, overcoming difficulties is part of the gaming experience as it is intended also from the point of view of the artistic meaning of the work.
And difficulties can be overcome in various ways: with combat skills, levels, active objects, combat strategies and I hope that other methods will be added, I would not want an inexperienced player to find himself in front of a wall without being familiar with these systems (partly due to the lack of adequate tutorials and partly due to the lack of exploration of the game mechanics) and decide to lower the difficulty when he is perfectly able to overcome the wall.
If they have tried everything and still can’t do it, and are having a bad experience then it’s a good idea for them to lower the difficulty but not before looking for solutions, testing themselves, playing by thinking actively and not by turning their brains off with the vague goal of moving forward.
Where a game lacks empathy for newcomers, that’s what veterans are for. The game should stay difficult, to maintain that feeling of accomplishment but also be approachable. If the game turns out to be good the rest comes easy.
I am of the opinion that everything should be accessible in the game, and for that we need better tutorials and a clearer game language. Fromsoftware uses the message system to solve some of the game’s communication problems, but it would be better if these problems were fewer and less serious in the first place.
And this is why Fromsoftware keeps being peak to this day
I think FS fans underestimate how many people use mods to lower the difficulty in their games. Sure, many are doing the intended way, but so many others aren’t. Elden Ring would have sold way less imho if mods had been blocked for any reason or method. Looking at the sales “omg 30 million sold” doesn’t tell you how many beat it, or even how many enjoyed beating it. A way smaller number by comparison for sure. Another difference is that FS has built a community that has adapted to this style for a long time, but many forget that at the beginning their approach was met with tons of criticism and frustration. Only through the very most dedicated did people find ways to enjoy it and teach others. That’s not bad, but NRFTW doesn’t have 20 years to make a community adapt to it.
FS is not perfect, Elden Ring has made great strides regarding accessibility within their games but it is still behind, as I was saying we need better tutorials, clearer game language.
As for the mods, many add content and do not make the game easier and the most common mod makes multiplayer more usable, I personally have never heard of people who have made elder ring easier with mods but I could be wrong, maybe it’s the youtube algorithm that doesn’t send me this type of content
Hi,
For some that game is difficult and others too easy, it highlights that we are all different and banning access to this game with a high difficulty at start is not ideal.
Everyone should be able to evolve at their own pace with a suitable system of difficulty. We have to think collectively and not just about ourselves.
And that’s why there should be different options to deal with obstacles, different builds, active items, if the intrusiveness comes from inside the game instead of from a setting it’s better for the experience
“Seemless Co-op” is a difficulty adjustment in a sense too. The game isn’t balanced around many players at once all the time. But there are few mods that say in the title “easy difficulty” but stuff like increasing the souls by a percentage, or removing losing souls on death, that saves a lot of difficulty too. Those are very common. In Wicked it could also be that enemies remain just the same but there are no timed events like taking 3 hours to upgrade something. Ingredient pickups could be doubled. Durability could be removed entirely, and so on.
This reminds me of the Bloodborne discussion. Players. (the developer should do what they want) FS. (there are no shields in the game) Players. (that’s BS, nobody can play it) FS. (there will be shields) Player (YAEEEE) comes out, there’s a bad shield that nobody uses, but the game is good.
Moon said it’s not just a difficulty slider, so maybe try it out first, then you might still find it crap, and to everyone’s surprise, Moon can take it back if it doesn’t work. It’s early access.
