Controller mapping has incorrect label for R3 - says it swaps items/food, actually toggles target lock

I’m using a controller (the game explicitly tells you to) but I don’t want to use auto lock on. I always disable this feature since it limits what you can do in these games. Being able to switch between target lock and free aim is really critical in a game. But the controller mappings don’t seem to include any way to lock on/off (most Soulslike games use R3, right analog stick press). I see it in the keyboard mappings, so the ability must exist. It seems like the only way to lock on with a controller is automatically, which is not a good option for me.

Surely I must be missing something. Maybe there’s a way to change this with Steam input? But looking at the controller layout, it doesn’t include actions the way official layouts normally do. For example, the R3 action is just “Right thumbstick press,” so apparently Steam is just sending DirectInput to the game or something? The action “Lock on” doesn’t show up in the list of valid inputs. I have to choose a controller action. So I can only remap R3 to R3 or other buttons. I can’t remap it to “Lock on”.

Which means my only option is to remap it to a keyboard key, but that would change my button prompts and it’s janky. The game should just provide this, especially since the game explicitly tells you to use a controller. I guess I must have overlooked something. Thanks.

Edit: I also noticed the right trigger opens a gesture menu. It would be nice if we could swap this out for lock-on, since gestures are not a combat essential, life-or-death feature, while lock-on is. Ideally, swapped with R3 “switch items/food,” to be consistent with the button layout most people are familiar with for this genre, with Souls games being the most noteworthy example. The right analog stick is a very sensible choice for this action where it’s already used to change targets.

Not a fix but a few tips in the meantime
The red dot will get larger/brighter when locked on but is soft locked/dim when there by default.
You can also use R stick ledt amd right flick (no idea on keyboard) to change targets, or verify a lock on by pressing up and “locking” it.
No dot? Try flicking up to get it to show up. If arching off screen fire a single arrow to verify before popping a rune shot. Melee range you should see the dot.
Melee is pretty straight forward and harder to miss but This was extremely helpful on my archer build and hopefully helps you.

Thanks so much for the advice. I really appreciate it. That does seem helpful. Thankfully I don’t intend to play a ranged character, but it sounds like I’ll still need to make use of that if I want to play optimally.

I still think it’s pretty disappointing that you have to go to such effort to kinda sorta lock on. Target lock is a really essential, basic part of this kind of game. The game does advertise itself as a Souls-like on the Steam store, so I think it’s fair to hold it to the standard of a Souls-like.

R3 locks/unlocks targets, it’s just not listed on the Controller input mapping picture in the game.

Thanks! Yeah I’ve since discovered that the Controller guide is wrong. R3 does not switch between food and quick items, it behaves like a normal target lock. A bit odd, but a huge relief. I wonder if this has changed since Knite_137’s playthrough?
