Computer Restarting Randomly During Play

Nothing else seems to cause my computer to do this, but somehow playing NRFTW causes my PC to reboot itself. This can happen 5 minutes into playing, or after 5 hours straight. The only common things I’ve noticed on the two times it happened is that it:

  1. Happened on the same character.
  2. Happened when I tried to load into a new area.

I’ve seen three other posts about similar issues (practically identical), but all of the threads lead to a dead end with no one responded with a solution or really any firm idea of what’s causing it. I will list the following since these are typically questions that are asked on all three threads:

  1. I am using an Xbox controller, and all of its firmware is up to date.
  2. All of my PC components are up to date as well, including the BIOS.
  3. There does not seem to be any issues with my PSU that I am currently aware of, nor does it show any signs of being at fault.

When I look through my Event Viewer the !WARNING! that is listed just before the computer reboots is as follows:

The driver \Driver\WUDFRd failed to load.
Device: ROOT\DISPLAY\0000
Status: 0xC0000365

I will continue to try and find a solution, but I wanted to post here in hopes that someone actually knows what’s going on.

Again… this only happens with NRFTW. Let me know if you want anything posted here from me.

Hey @Wolf ,

This is a really strange one. Im going to escalate this for you. I’d like to ask for your player logs and diax dag. Below I will post how you can get those for us.

DXdiag: Can be found by pressing your Windows key, typing “Run”
Input DxDiag into the run prompt.
Press the “Save all information” and send us the file it generates.,
,
Player logs: Can be found in the following path (please change USERNAME to the name of your PC) C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\LocalLow\Moon Studios\NoRestForTheWicked

With thanks,

Jake

How do I send you these files?

You can send them using wetransfer or via Google Drive. Put them all in a folder and share the link here, hope this helps!

Thanks for the fast reply. I posted them. Hopefully someone can find a solution.

I also hope it’s actually the game that’ doing this and not something randomly dying in my PC. It’s all pretty new and well maintained, plus everything else is working without any issues at all. So… I highly doubt it is hardware related (but you can just never know… fingers crossed)

Any updates? (20 characters……….)

Thank you for sending that in Wolf, we will need you to open up access on that file to us as it wants us to request permisson to view.

Once this is done, it will be open for the dev team to review.

Jake

Hello,

The driver \Driver\WUDFRd failed to load.
Device: ROOT\DISPLAY\0000
Status: 0xC0000365

After investigating this error, it appears that this isn’t an NRFTW issue. However, the demand NRFTW has put on your Pc has exposed this issue for you,

If WUDFRd or display drivers are outdated, corrupted, or misconfigured, the stress of gaming can trigger or reveal the issue.

Uninstalling and reinstalling GPU drivers or updating drivers has been known to resolve the issue, especially when the error only presents during gaming workloads.

If that doesn’t resolve the issue, come back and I will help you troubleshoot further. This is, however, not an NRFTW issue based on that error.

After reading this, and knowing that I had already troubleshot my rig in that manner (completely uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them fresh and controlled) and yet having the issue persist, I decided to turn to ChatGPT to analyze the data and pontificate the issue.

I finally came to the conclusion that the issue was Meta’s App that I have for my VR headset. Even though my headset was not plugged in, and even though the App was closed, it still ran in the background and I’m guessing that it has something now that wants to check if the game I’m playing is a VR game or not. Or at least it wants to check if I have my headset on, even though the headset isn’t even connected (I have a Rift S, it has to be connected to be picked up at all).

So, GPT suggested to try shutting it down completely, including it’s background (hidden) running, and sure enough the problem has stopped. GPT even offered to make a .bat file that lets me turn the App off and on, including its persistent background processes.

I’m posting that here so that you guys are aware of this, and so that anyone else that has the Meta App + this issue (or other issues, because I’ve noticed that the game runs more smoothly now too) can have an idea of what to do in order to try and troubleshoot the issue.

Hopefully none of these things are here once the game is fully released and optimized, because although it was the Meta App that was causing this, it was only in NRFTW due to some way it wants to load. I say load because it seemed to happen always upon loading into new areas, and not really any other time (very rarely would that happen). I’ve also noticed while digging through your forums that many people have noticed other performance problems related to loading in this game.

In short, if this Meta App was having a conflicting issue with NRFTW, then there are likely other Apps that do as well that are commonly found on a gamer’s PC (Discord, Battle .net, GPU tweeking apps, etc… ) and to that extent, if NRFTW is the only game that is causing conflict with these common Apps, then I would say that falls into your lap entirely to ultimately optimize your game and fix.

Take care, and thank you.

Yeah the reason it was exposed was because the game currently has a high demand on your PC. As we continue to optimize this should become less and less of an issue.

Dude! Thank you so much! Exactly my issue, and solved! :folded_hands:
