I have an internet filter and tried turning it off. I didn’t expect it to work because I didn’t make any changes between when it was working and when it wasn’t. Also, the site was reachable outside of the game. Glad to report that turning off the filter worked. Don’t love that is the solution though. Why would NRFTW be flagged as dangerous? What changed late Feb that made it stop working?
If you still want my logs I can get them uploaded (with the filter on and with it off).
We have tried everything and read every fourum. We got to play together for about 30 minutes. Then their ping spiked to over 2000 and they couldn’t do anything and ever since have not been able to go online. We have.
verified game files.
took down their firewall.
ran as administrator.
switched the server to the old one and back to the new one to “wake up” their account.
restarted steam restarted everything.
restarted the router. (i don’t know how to flush dns)
deleted the game and redownloaded it on the boot drive with all of the above and nothing has worked
Now they still can not access online at all.
We live in West aus.
any support is appreciated.
it seems nothing to be unusual on this 7th day of play - unless we play from ru so we have different protocols of connection day by day nowadays. I used VPN and sucessfully got online status.
btw I got this string as user theGiallo in player log - cannot connect:

Hi! Me & my 2 friends bought the game to play together. For me all working fine, but for my friends showing always offline in right top corner. Nothing helps. They tried all a/m solutions, but nothing works. Im living in different country and i can get online status via connecting from my friend acc. but them cant get online even using vpn
A friend of mine based in Paris, France, encountered this issue, and we’ve been troubleshooting this bug together. I’m located in China while he lives in Paris.
We have attempted numerous fixes one after another, including modifying DNS settings, flushing the DNS cache, connecting via VPN, disabling the Windows Firewall, launching the game with administrator privileges, switching to the game’s beta branch then reverting back to the stable release, yet none of these solutions worked.
We tried one final troubleshooting step: I logged into his Steam account on my PC and launched the game, but it still showed offline mode. In contrast, logging into my own Steam account on the exact same computer worked perfectly fine.
Later, my friend signed into my Steam account on his computer and booted up No Rest for the Wicked. Surprisingly, my account could successfully connect to the backend servers and play online without any issues on his machine.
From this, I deduce there is a bug occurring during the Steam entitlement verification process tied to his account. This permanently locks his account into offline mode on every device he logs into, preventing it from retrieving a valid authentication ticket and resulting in failed multiplayer validation attempts.
Additional note: Player-prev.log is the log generated when logging into his account on my computer, while Player.log is generated by my own account on the same PC. My account functions without any issues.
Change Download Region: In Steam, go to Settings > Downloads > Download Region. Change it to a different nearby city, restart Steam entirely, and launch the game. This hopefully forces Steam to talk to a different authentication server.
Toggle Steam Beta: Go to Settings > Interface > Client Beta Participation. Switch to the Beta build (or switch back to stable if already on it). This forces Steam to redownload core account-handling files and recertify the account.
Thank you for your reply. I will ask him to try this solution.
However, I suspect this fix will still not work.
First of all, when I logged into his Steam account and launched the game on my PC, it still stayed offline. We are in different regions, so we connect to separate Steam authentication servers.
Secondly, I had never logged into his Steam account or run the game under his profile on this computer before. Therefore, the account data downloaded on this first login should have been intact.
I deduce the root cause lies on the game’s online backend servers. The “NameResolutionFailure” error has already been mentioned in community discussions, and it also appears in his PlayerLog.
This error also occurred when I launched the game with his account on my machine, yet it completely disappeared once I switched to my own account.
Is there anything in this thread helpful for your friend? Could you get started with the suggested solutions and please let us know if something worked or didn’t so far.
I have had him try every method posted in the community discussions, but none worked.
Additionally, I suggested another potential solution. Since I suspected the issue was account-related, I asked him to use a brand-new Steam account that had never launched the game before, share the title via Steam Family Sharing, and then run the game. Unfortunately, he was still stuck in offline mode.
Now I am wondering if this is a regional issue. Could certain EU regulations be blocking connections to the online servers?
This is an extremely strange bug. It seems players located within the EU are far more likely to run into this problem.
I’m currently living in the UK and all of the testing was done in the UK. I’m playing on a Steam Deck, but I also tested on Windows with exactly the same result.
Here’s what I’ve verified:
Steam Deck (SteamOS): Offline
Steam Deck (Windows): Offline
Hyperoptic broadband: Offline
Mobile hotspot: Offline
The most important finding is that we tested on my colleague’s PC:
My colleague’s Steam account → Online
My Steam account → Offline
So the problem follows my Steam account, not the device or the network.
My Steam Store Country is China, but I’m physically located in the UK, so I’m wondering if this could be related to account authentication or backend region assignment rather than a local network issue.
