Where to start, new build

Hi,

what would be the first step when trying to choose a new way (build/playstyle).
Weapon?

t.

hi Niphates, what a good question!

I think the most important thing about choosing a weapon is the feel for it and it’s attack pattern. Some weapons dont have any charged attacks for example, or a little jump etc.

You can try any weapon you meet the level requirement for, and once you find something you like you start to build your gear towards that weapon.

That means choosing synergies with your enchantments, and good runes to install on your weapon!

Let me know if you are served enough by this or you want more advice, or suggestions

In addition to what Salis said, also decide on the weight of the armor you use (and consequently your roll).

Then also consider that you can have multiple weapons; I prefer having two weapons to swap between a fast one with little range and a slow one with a lot of range.

Then think about the runes you want to use (in case you don’t know, you can remove the base runes from a weapon if you don’t like it).

Then think about the rings you want to use.

Then think about the enchantments you want to try, how they synergize with the weapon, and the rings and synergies between the enchantments.

Thank you, guys. But to give you my perspective:

I leveled out and exalted ā€˜everything’ a long time ago, got all legendaries und close to every item (weapons included) as a plagued version. Right now, I got a legendary fire hammer build with heavy plate. A bit slow but the animation alone is big fun and with potions I’m able to finish the crucible with it. Before that, I had a ā€˜block the enemy to death with my shield’-build to farm the crucible.
My ā€˜problem’ is, that I don’t want to go trial & error with new builds because I want a good balance between enjoying the game and pure grinding for the ressources to test builds.
Another problem of mine: I’m really bad in seeing big differences when changing enchantments or jewels.

Do you still want to use heavy armor in your new build?

Do you want a weapon with charged attacks or not?

Is there a specific weapon category or weapon you have in mind?

Have you tried the bows? Do you like them?

Do you want to try a specific archetype (like a wizard or an assassin)?

Do you want me to show you my builds for inspiration?

I would encourage you to play with a very different weapon. If you played with a slow double handed hammer, try with double wield daggers.

I loved playing with shields, you could try a shield based build. I made a guide that should be somewhere in the forum.

Thing is, which of those questions is the most important one for a new build?

What underlying rule is there regarding the stats required for different weapons and shields? What can I combine with the same stats and what combinations are excluded or would result in very bad stats distribution?

And there is another option: I just choose a look I like and build the rest upon it  .

Is there a gallery with many player characters?

It depends on your playstyle / the new playstyle you want to adopt with the new build.

Weapons and shields scale with one or two of the attack stats (strength, dexterity, intelligence and faith), When they scale with two stats for example strength + Intelligence to get the maximum damage you must have both stats at the same level like 36str+36int If the number is not balanced (like 26str+46int) you will not get way less extra damge. So all your weapons (and the shields too) have to scale from the same stats.

As for the rest of the stat distribution, it’s mostly up to you, but if you don’t use a big shield, I think it’s important to avoid playing in heavy load, I find that armors that have a medium weight are the best as long as you don’t waste too many points for the equip load stat, and if you want to have a low load to have the right shot you should use light weapons rather than throwing all the levels in the equip load stat.

Go for it, then give me a screenshot of your build and I’ll help you distribute the stats if you want.

I’m not sure I understand the question well, but if you’re asking me if you can have more characters, the answer is yes, if you’re asking if you can check out all the options in one place, I’d say you should watch a video to see all the weapons and armors.

These are some of my favorite builds, I hope they can inspire you, if any of these interest you let me know so I can explain the details:

Regarding the stat combination, as far as I can remember, best shield ā€œFalstead’s Bulwarkā€ doesn’t necessarily requires the same optimal stats as some weapons. But I’m not sure.
And going plate and shield is not a no brainer. You go plate for stagger resistance and it offers the opportunity to use slow and heavy twohanders with being interrupted while attacking, so no shield.

Your ā€œGain 25 Focus on Fatalityā€ is more of a farm build because useless in boss fights?

Shields don’t require stats to work, but if you don’t have them, they give you less armor when you use them, so you should still have shields that have the same stats requirements as the weapon you use (to be optimal) or at least meet the requirements (to be somewhat ok). So in the case of ā€œFalstead’s Barricadeā€ you should use weapons that scale with Strength.

It’s true that it’s not effective against bosses but that’s because there aren’t many better options, The other enchantments I would have considered are: ā€œIndestructibleā€; ā€œHeat or Lightning Infusionā€œ; ā€œGain 15 Focus on Killā€; ā€Movement Speed increased by 7%-15% for 10s after Rune Attackā€.

If you look at the Excel sheet you will a clearer idea.

I’ve chosen a ā€œBig trouble in little Chinaā€-build  .
The hat animation alone is worth it :innocent: .
