Regular crashing

I bought this game a couple weeks ago and have really been enjoying it, but I am getting VERY frequent crashing, probably on average 1/hr of gameplay. Sometimes I can play for a couple hours without crashes, sometimes it crashes after 5 minutes.

The behavior is always the same - the whole screen goes black (as if the video drivers are crashing) for a second or two, then the screen comes back frozen. I’ve tried leaving it frozen for ~5 minutes without any change, so I have to forcefully close the program. The background music continues to play without issue.

There doesn’t seem to be anything consistent between the crashes. I’ve had it crash in multiple areas, doing multiple different things.

I’ve verified game files, I have the newest drivers. I tried messing with some video settings without any improvement.

Zip file containing the player logs, datastore folder, backtrace folder, dxdiag, and a short video of a previous crash that I had recorded just to demonstrate what the crash looks like in game.

Hope you have some suggestions on things to try!

Hi thesambassador,

I will try to help you troubleshooting, I also have escalated your report towards the developers.

Can you answer some questions please?

  • are these crashes only happening on one Realm in particular? If you don’t know, please verify by creating a new Realm and see if your issues go away!
  • Can you check how old your Realm creation date is?
    • To do so copy paste this: %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\MoonStudios\NoRestForTheWicked\DataStore into Win + R
    • go into 24313
    • sort by “Date modified”, open the latest Realm file since this should be the Realm you latest entered, right click + properties and check the ‘created’ line.

Let me know please!

Silas

I only have been playing on a single realm, and I just started playing the game a couple of weeks ago. That said, I just created a brand new character and realm, and it crashed during the prologue (right after I made it above deck towards the end of it).

My normal character’s realm was created on 12/1.

I also tried a solution in another thread to uninstall Microsoft GameInput, but I’m still crashing.

Hi thesambassador, I’m sorry for the incredible late reply. Did you get this to working in the mean time?

I haven’t. The game still crashes fairly regularly, even in the newest experimental multiplayer build.

Sometimes it’ll crash after a couple minutes of playing, other times I can play for multiple hours without any crashes.

I recently tried disabling the Steam overlay and Steam game recording, which I had enabled, but that doesn’t seem to have had any impact.

In the Windows event logs, I can see that dwm.exe is crashing right before NoRest goes unresponsive. Here’s some of the event log text

Do you have HDR enabled in windows? if so, can you disable and see if that results in no crashing?

Just curious:

  • VSync on or off?
  • are you capping framerates?
  • have you ever done any under -or overclocking?
  • what upscaling method?
  • Dynamic Resolution Scaling on or off?
  • do you have multiple screens?
  • Turning of any overlays (besides Steam Overlay like you mentioned) can seriously help random crashes, it did for my system. I don’t know if AMD has any?

I may have found the solution - insofar as I haven’t had a crash in the last 4-5 hours of play or so. I’ll update this if the issue comes back up, but the solution for this is bizarre - you update your Xbox controller firmware.

I stumbled across this Reddit thread

The thread references using an Xbox Series X/S Controller, but I have an Xbox One controller and the steps to resolve things seemed to have worked:

Download the Xbox Accessories app from the Microsoft/Windows Store
Connect the controller
Update the firmware

Weirdly, this has stopped the crashes so far, but I’ll update if that changes.

Thank you so much for following up! Good find as well, if this was the source of the crashes this will help others greatly too!

Thanks thesambassador, I hope you have good gaming days ahead
