PC shuts down as soon as I load into save

2 nights ago I launched No Rest for the Wicked (the first time since the new big update) and it boots up fine, as usual, and at the character screen I continue into my game and the PC immediately shuts down and it takes me 10 minutes of unplugging my PC and trying to boot it back up before it finally starts… it was just immediately just shutting itself back off as soon as I try to turn it on hitting the power button. I chalk it up to maybe a weird coincidence and go to bed as it was late. Prior to this event I was playing multiple other games (Dune, Stellar Blade, the Alters, etc), some installed on the same SSD as no rest for the wicked, some were on another SSD. I went to bed and didn’t think much of it.

Yesterday I played DUNE and stellar blade for multiple hours with zero issues, no crashes at all, watched youtube, ran the usual daily software (AutoDesk fusion, Photoshop, PyCharm, etc), all all software and games ran perfect.. zero crashes as usual. My PC temps and voltages all perfect. Decided last night to finally again try and check out the new patch for Wicked. Launched the game and it once launches fine, as before. As soon as I try to load into my actual game the PC shuts down. just the same as the night before. Now, it takes a solid hour before I’m able to boot it back up. Hitting the power button turns on the lights and a second later the PC shuts right back off. Something with this game specifically is triggering something with my PC that is causing it to power down that no other game or software is having an issue with.

After I finally got the PC back up and running (I triple checked and reseated all PSU wiring, drive wiring, etc after the first event and again after the second time the PC powered itself down) I ran drive diagnostics on the game drive including the 3 hour full scan and no issues were found. Validating game files found no issue.

My PC has made up of an ASUS motherboard, ASUS 4090, AMD 7950x3d, 64g memory, and multiple m2 and SSD drives, runs with low temps, and all PSU voltages show steady and correct.

Investigating further into the Event Viewer and I found some references to GameInput Service terminating around the time the game would nuke out my PC:

The GameInput Service service terminated with the following error:
The compound file GameInput Service was produced with a newer version of storage.

Googling around it seems at some point you can end up with multiple GameInput Service services and if an app or game tries to grab the older one it can cause issues. I wonder if maybe No Rest for the Wicked would try to hook with the older version and then cause the PC to just shut down? I see references of, “Computer randomly restarting after GameInput Service terminated” and such in various posts online, though my PC wasn’t randomly restarting but it was completely shutting down as soon as I would try to load into my save, so maybe at that point something tries to hook to the service or something.

Unfortunately it seems because the game doesn’t crash out to the desktop no crash reports are dumped into the backtrace\craspad\reports directory.

Here are the Play.log, Player-prev.log, DataStore directory, and dxdiag files:

Thank you!

thank you for the report and logfiles.

do you by any chance use a xbox controller? there were people having issues because some controller .dll file was missing. i could not find the related topic unfortunately.

also, did you update all drivers?

Yes, I use an Xbox Elite Series 2 controller for this game and a number of other games (The Alters, KCD2, Elden Ring Nightreign, etc)… I hadn’t had any issues with the controller with any other game but as you mentioned it I noticed I do not have or use the Xbox Accessories app and went ahead now and installed it and it does show a firmware update for my Xbox controller so I went and installed it.

All other firmware and drivers are updated and have been including the various AMD drivers, NVIDIA drivers (576.80), BIOS, etc.

did this solve the issue? i can’t remember which .dll file exactly was missing.

also if you are using cable/wired connection, try different USB port and different cable.

I can’t risk nuking my PC right now. I’ll attempt to launch game after I finish some work. Also to note I also uninstalled the older Microsoft GameInput service which I had read causes some issues that maybe No Rest for the Wicked was triggering (and no other games) according to Computer randomly restarting after GameInput Service terminated - Microsoft Q&A.

alright, waiting for your feedback then

Once I finish grading Python code finals I will attempt again… maybe Monday, and will report back

Reporting back.. sorry for the delay. I did not attempt it right after removing the extra gameinput service and updating the controller firmware. I had just picked up a 1500va/1200w UPS and noticed when I unplug the UPS from the wall my PC would reboot instead of staying up as it should with a pure sine and very good modern UPS. I replaced the PSU and attempted the test again and the PC stayed up and did not reboot itself with power transition. I booted up the game and was able to load into my save without the PC rebooting

Very weird as all PSU voltages read good, all multi meter testing of the PSU and PSU cables tested good… but it seems maybe a capacitor or something within the PSU was on the way out and somehow only this game, or something this game utilized with the gameinput service or what, brought the issue to light, lol

thanks for the follow up. i assume i can close this thread then?

No problem! Yes, that is fine.
