First Boss: is there a way to grind better gear for him?

I hit a brick wall at Tom. Is there a way to grind for better gear? Baddies dont seem to respawn so I can just go back and grind, right?

I’m not sure about grinding as I don’t think enemies will respawn yet (until you beat the boss). Make sure you’ve explored all the areas to clear out all enemies to level up.
A little tip tho, apply flame oil that you can buy from the blacksmith to your weapon as you’ll do a lot more damage in my experience as he’s weak to fire. Good luck

When new “fog of war” appears on the map those areas have respawned.

There is a lot of stuff to do before the boss. There is even a hidden quest in a cave that might reward you with a much needed level.

Like Jim said, explore around some more!

Awesome! Thanks for the tip. I have bad loot karma, only found two weapons: daggers and a claymore. My dodges on Tom dont seem to work, maybe burning stamina in spamming dodge. Need chill pill.

I’m sure you’ll beat him. Grind for the evening. Maybe check a couple of youtube videos of the fight if you want to prepare yourself for a bit.

When you beat him, and you will. You’ll be like, “man that was easier than I initially thought”.

Also bring loads of food and dont be too greedy!

There are 3 ways.

  • keep exploring for area you may have missed. You have 1/3 of the entire map available to you.

  • wait for chests to respown as the fog take over the map, enemy won’t respown so eraly in the game but chests will.

  • just create a new realm.

Good point with creating a new realm! Should even the odds quite a bit for him if he grinds there.

I dont get the create new realm thing, dont I have to create a new character as well for the realm?

No. Just select the realms menu and click create new. And join that one with your character.

Try lighting your load like removing one or two of your heaviest gear… that worked for me as i found it easier to dodge and manoeuvre to avoid the bosses attacks.

I don’t believe you need better gear for Torn to be honest. It can be incredibly hard to outgear anything in the beginning, because the loot is really scarce until you kill the Torn. I recommend getting quick weapon with %Health gain on Hit. Other than that I’m afraid you just need to learn the boss’s patterns and just “git gud”.

I am thinking the major problem is that there doesnt seem to be a map of buttons on the controller; I just found that there is a parry button. Parry might carry thru that fight. Thanks for the reply, I will look for health gear, but I have not seen such yet in game at my level. I might be unlucky.

Hey @KingGrok did you manage to beat the boss?

Thanks, but no. I gave up and went back to Path of Exile.

They should have put Torn AFTER reaching town, only allowing progress beyond after beating him. Then I could have experienced crafting, farming and exploring to build myself up to for the fight. No enjoyment in this game for me running around the same little map picking up the same loot and never able to progress.

I get it, many feel they are awesome, and nobody but the awesome should play the game, but I recommend AGAINST buying the game for any casual player.

Let the devs lock out casuals and leave money on the table.

Ah that’s a shame but I understand, it’s not gonna be for everyone and who knows they might release something that makes it easier in future that brings you back to it.
Enjoy POE anyway

True.
I refunded, but can always repurchase if they do something for the casuals.

LOL

Well, alrighty. That’s a … solution, I guess.

He didnt’t try hard enough if he had time to refund the game. Q_Q

Agreed… It took me 5.5h before I even attempted Torn… I explored every nook and cranny first, was like level 7 already. Even though the fight was still hard, the gear weight really makes a difference for how well you can dodge

May be too late now for this reply, but I think my suggestion can help all new players from background other than “Soul-like”

First Boss is not hard at-all, you may need a several tries but you will finally get through with ease as long as you understand how to approach the fight.

Gear doesn’t matter (at least at this early point) as gears you can farm at this stage cannot let you ignore combat mechanic.

I’m also from POE as well, and have no Soul-like experience beside watching streams from streamers.

The most important thing in battle is PATIENCE!

  • DO NOT go head-in and attack: You WILL BE stuck in attack animation and knockdowned by boss’ first attack and killed by it’s follow-up!

  • DO NOT attack with your full combo reglessly as your stamina will be eaten up and you cannot evade because you has no stamina left!

  • DO NOT trade blows with the boss, as you will always lose because HP recovery is limited at this point.

  • DO play defensively until their attack ends (LEARN their attack patterns) and only attack when they are in RECOVERING POSE.

  • KEEP watching how long their recovering pose last, STOP your combo if it takes longer than their recovery.

  • GIVE yourself BREATHING ROOM to recover stamina, only GO-IN if you have enough stamina, and RETREAT before it runout.

Even if you can only get 1-hit in with each attack window, you will be able to kill it AS LONG AS you stay ALIVE.

Hope this help you & all fellow new comers! :grinning:
