Extending the level progression and character attribute systems

Well hello there!

As you all know the current level cap is lvl 30 and with the breach update around the corner i’d like to discuss the character leveling approach and encourage you to lean more into a souls like progression system regarding character level, character stats and weapon scaling.

I’m not a game designer and this is all purely subjective. But perhaps many other people feel the same way.

Why do i want to discuss this?

The current level and attribute system feels a bit shallow due to the level cap of 30 and gear not interacting much with the allocated attributes. Most of the weapons are very close to eachother when it comes to scaling damage from stats. The only thing the attributes currently accomplish is unlock weapon choice.

Here are some of the pros of adopting an uncapped leveling system

  1. It provides a soft difficulty system that allows players to overlevel when stuck on a boss / area
  2. It provides more reasons play for people who love maxing out their characters
  3. In very late game it would allow players who maxed out their stats to try out different gear without having to re-spec
  4. It feels more meaningful to find a piece of gear that profits from your stat distribution and really lets you live out your specific archetype fantasy to the fullest potential. there should be a few “best in slot options” imho.

I’m aware that it could conflict with some existing systems such as dynamic area level scaling, gear crafting, gear enchantments and i could think of a few solutions already but ultimately the dev team is more qualified for solving these issues.

Nevertheless i just wanted to share my point of view and would be interested in your thoughts. Even if you think this would not be a good fit for No Rest For The Wicked.

Thanks for reading and have a nice day.

I don’t think we’ll ever reach this uncapped level from a typical souls game, I’m not sure what the max level will end up being, but I’d imagine somewhere around 60. (The Breach will not be raising the cap) With 3 attribute points every level, that is still 177 points to distributes as you wish, which is more than you’d usually get on a first playthrough on a souls (excluding ER). I’m sure when we get beyond Tier 3, with the combat rework, we’ll see more clarity on power progression.
