Everything and mostly the combat system is wrong

My favorite part about this post is how extremist it is, how adamant you are that the entire game can’t work that there’s basically 0 redeeming qualities to the actual gameplay. Quite bold to say that isometric precision combat + level design can’t work. cool. cool

No need to read the entire post to quickly understand that the game may not be for you… and that’s ok, some will love some don’t. Surely the game has a lot to improve, but if you didn’t like core features it’s ok to move on to something else.

Just a thought, but you Repeatedly call people who are working on the game that you want to enjoy “Stupid”. Might want to change the language a bit and make the arguments less stupid and use less aggressive terms. : )

I just would like to add that I do agree with a lot of sentiment that is expressed here about the tone of the OP. It should have been more nuanced, less confrontational and more constructive.

I agree and disagree, yess this game merges different genres and, for the moment, the combat experience is not well optimized. Yess it’s too difficult for me, not well balanced. But I don’t understand why some people hate so much the combat system here. Ok, when you compare with Elden Ring or Returnal, it’s clear, you really won’t compete the extreme reactivity and fluidity of a Returnal… It’s just impossible to reach. Ok, the stemina is also a problem… for me. But the attacks, special attacks and block are so satisfying!

I really love the atmosphere, story and building system.

I love also the characters’ look, I love the female body : it’s a question of taste. The outfits are strange, weird, and I can find some ugly, but I love the fact they try to do something different.

I am not sure and I don’t think this game have received disastrous criticism and is in a wrong turn like you believe : sales are good, review are globally positive, big streamers have been positive…

They will improve this game, but maybe not in the direction you want: it’s interesting to do something different.

Thanks for putting in some passion -
Maybe you can add some good criticism (it‘s good to be a little bit sceptical, when it comes to EA). But try not to push your own vision/criticism too much, as it may alienate people, lead to less constructive feedback and less improvement to the game (and improving the game is what we all should be here for).

Some things are design choices. I usually tend to try to get, what the developer is going for and try to find a consensus between that, mass appeal and my own personal appeal.

Anyways its always a good opportunity to give feedback on harsh feedback. So thank you for that.

I think, the character design is meant to be unique, practical and timeless. Personally love that approach. It may not provide the most mass appeal, but I personally think its great. It provides the game with its own style and liberates it from „objective“ judgements, when it comes to the looks and also perceived realism of characters in particular, thusly vastly extends the possibilities for character design choices.

It could be a bit faster. Automatically Sprinting out of Combat with no Stamina cost could be a menu toggle. That said, i like that it is slow. Makes Actions feel a bit more deliberate, which i think is the goal there. If you want to move very fast (and i think that should remain special), you can build your character for that - Which is already possible.

Additional movement mechanics are a great opportunity imo.

Stealth and leaning
I‘d love to see the stealth system expanded and maybe cover system added. Leaning shouldn‘t require you to push a button though. I got a post planned on mechanics. If you don‘t like to go lean and stealth you shouldn‘t have to, but i do think its great that is in the game.

platforming
Platforming is not what I like about the game. I don‘t necessarily think it‘s bad to have no manual jump (though it would open up some design possibilities) Remember, sadly, this is made with controller in mind, which only has so many buttons. That being said the verticality is great, platforming could be a lot more forgiving (e.g. let the character hold onto a ledge if the fall would result in death).

I don‘t think they copy too much, just because… I personally like a slower, more visceral, more deliberate ARPG, with more tactile mechanics and they are pretty close to achieving that.
That being said, building is currently a bit slow and limited in options, which for me is the most important part about ARPGs (not the button mashing, zooming, blasting experience).

I get where you are coming from, but a lot of this comes down to personal taste. The devs should stick to their vision and hopefully pick up some good advice/ideas/wishes that don‘t conflict with it too much along the way.

I like that you can parry while blocking. :upside_down_face: Though I am sure if you really wanted you could get that option without an extra Button…

On parry
Parry can be very strong with affixes, making it rewarding even if you miss it sometimes. That being said, I‘d like it if it would be made more accessible (distinct visual/audio cue), so more casual and/or new players can get into it and we aren‘t punished by whacky attack animations.

Minimap overlay is not needed, as lvls are reused and/or not that large. Size/customization option would be great though.

90% agreed.

Two Points

  1. We should build a strong base first in EA.
  2. Most items/options should focus on mechanics rather than stats, to make the game feel more tactile. Currently most legendary items are just not that interesting.

Can‘t really add much, other thank you for taking the time to communicate your pov, since its very personal.

I would encourage you to engage with more specific discussions in a constructive manner. I think you could add a lot there.

Cheers :pray::smiling_face:

This thread gave me leprosy

Funny that i agree with you, given how it usually wents between us

Yes. I think that catto overshot a little in the tone… Some of the things that he adresses are valid, however,… lets say … not ideally communicated.

this i agree with, actually true as fuck. i dont see the point in that. bit iffy on the rest

Couldn’t disagree more with the majority of your negative feedback. Sounds like Wicked just isn’t the game for you, which is fine.

Thanks for sharing your perspective @Catto It seems valid and like NRFW it’s for you.
Inversely, games like Diablo and POE 1 aren’t for me, but I really enjoy many aspects of them. Non-stop useless loot flying out so much that I need to get a ‘filter’ for it… seems very unintelligent to me.
Also, mowing down enemies while basically asleep or watching a tv show because combat is so easy… also unintelligent to me.

NRFW still has lots of loot but not so much we need a filter. NRFW has a ton of enemies but it isn’t mindless combat.

It’s a breath of fresh air to the isometric top-down ARPG genre, and yes ARPG does not just mean Diablo or ‘loot-fest’. This is a game design I’ve been hoping for for years! So, sorry it wasn’t your thing but for some it’s exactly what we’re looking for.

P.S. I imagine updates will just be more maps, more enemy challenges, more dungeons. That sounds like all I need.

Damn dude, go for a walk and get some sun to relax.

Ps : Go play AC Valhalla. You can run and jump everywhere like a pony without any ‘useless movement.’ You’ll feel the ‘ARPG’ vibe you want and let adults play NRFW.

I like all the discord about the combat. I still hope they implement a toggle option for when you block/need to use runes/pressing down the bow to aim/pressing down staves for magic, etc. For people with disabilities this would be a game changer (I am one such person - although I still play rather well, this would be extremely helpful). This could be a toggle option in the settings that could be clicked on and off by anyone.

I found that with the last patch the stamina reduction and attack speed rings seem to be working well now. It improves the speed of combat rather well. I am not sure if the speed ring things stack however. They should though, in my opinion. If you have 40% attack speed bonus between the rings it should all add up/same for the stamina reduction cost of attacks. Not 100% certain it is working completely correctly yet.

My thoughts exactly, There’s some really good critique here. It’s very opinionated and I don’t agree with a lot of it, but it’s clearly been well considered.

What detracts from it is calling things you don’t like, or worse the people who designed them, “stupid”. That just makes me disregard what is otherwise a valid argument. I’m stupid because I disagree? (Google ‘ad hominem’).

You also make blanket statements like “All souls-likes except [insert 1 game] are bad”. There no chance you’ve played every souls like. There are hundreds now. These extreme statements cheapen your otherwise valid arguments.

Otherwise I think what you’ve said is extremely useful as a point of view from an experienced gamer.

Maybe you should open your own post about it, since not everyone can give feedback for this by first hand … got it… hand… (sorry for that :upside_down_face:)

That is probably some valuable info for the devs.

Addon: (i’ll just drop that for interested readers)

I have. I just post it every where I can in hopes they see that! Thank you!

I agree with a lot of your points.

The long arms really ruin the appeal of character models for me. I always hate it when upper bodies are exaggerated large. I also hate oversized headgear and shoulder pads. I felt the faces looked pretty good and the eye texture shine was impressive. Just the long arms… ugh.

I like the art style, just not oversized arms. Not sure why that approach.

I really like that you mentioned the parry/guard on different buttons comment. I just realized how much better it would be if they were combined so that if you tap and quickly release guard, it would parry (and give it a longer window), or hold to guard. That way–like you said–it wouldn’t put you in a situation where you just ignore parry altogether (like me).

I love the long arms! I find it one of the most appealing quirks of the art design.

I wonder if we should take a poll:

Do you like the long arms?

  • Yes
  • No
  • No opinion
0 voters

Its not “I live the arms”. I think it all comes together in the general style to make a pretty nice aesthetic.
