Embers and re-rolling

Just some thoughts on re-rolling and embers in general after a fresh run on hard difficulty.

  • Embers have too many uses, or they’re are too scarce. There needs to be other currencies to manage some of what embers currently do. They open the crucible, they re-roll gear, respec points, and they increase meter contribution for plague and whisper meters more than any other item. If you don’t want currency bloat, or don’t want other materials to increase meter contribution more than embers, fine, but we need more embers dropping to do all this stuff.

  • Rerolling cost. It’s not fun farming up a bunch of embers, and not getting what you want. It’s fine not getting what you want, I’m not against rng elements, but now you can’t do any of the other stuff I mentioned above. Bummer. SOLUTION: Why not make re-rolling items a gold sink? Honestly, by the time you’re ready to start investing in gear, you’re kind of done worrying about how much coin you have. At least I am. Ilaria could do this, she doesn’t serve much purpose unless you’re running a specific build. It could incentivize you to upgrade her shop. I get it if another vendor needs to do it for thematic reasons. It’s nice being able to re-roll from anywhere, but, eh. I’m usually in town anyways.

  • Rerolling categories. I love how stats are sectioned into different categories, and you can only have one of each. It makes things fun trying to balance out negatives on other pieces of gear. Damage categories on weapons are too bloated. Cut dead stats, or move some of them to other gear slots. Rings carry one dmg stat roll now and we can re-roll rings? Numbers would probably need tuning for that…, but it would make finding another copy of that ring I like interesting.

  • Stat category locked when rolling OFF that specific roll. One thing I noticed, is that if you are rolling a specific category, lets say damage, you CAN NOT get another damage affix when you are rolling that stat. It’s counted as locked because it is currently on that piece of gear. Now, this isn’t that big of a deal if you’re looking for two categories still, but when you’re looking for something only in that category, you need to use TWO embers to try for it each time… not sure if this is by design, or would open up too many possibilities for each re-roll if it were changed. It’s kind of annoying when you’re trying to finish a piece though.

  • Current roll. Please, please, please let me choose to keep the current roll if I wish…

This game is great. It’s like a lot of my favorite titles all smashed into one. Keep up the good work.

Any other shower thoughts out there?

They don’t open the crucible anymore, you can go into the crucible without using embers, and the increased meter contribution It’s not a problem because you can still use the other items and the system still works well, and the respec is very cheap 1 Ember fot 10 points.

The problem is that to find the enchantments you are looking for on an item it can take 30+ embers, and not only is it an expensive process it’s also frustrating.

Here I propose a system that solves the problem: The RNG Problem, Enchantment System Vs Gem System (Major Edits)

Didn’t realize they patched out embers for crucible. I don’t run it much and didn’t check to see if they were being consumed after The Breach patch, oops!

The needing 30-50 plus embers per piece of gear is what it really boils down to. As it stands, we just don’t get to pull the slot machine lever often enough. I had read your post about gems. I like the idea of having gems being more expansive. The “Chipped” prefix indicates there will be some sort of combining process down the line imo. I think it might be neat if we could combine gems into a “setting” to create some of the effects you described. It would allow for more crafting, instead of just more ore and dirt pile farming.

However, I think it’s fine to have both gems, and enchanted gear. Having complete control of your build with gems serves as a great stepping stone in progression. I like the idea of enchanted gear having a higher ceiling because it creates something to chase. Needing to balance negatives is also fun.

Thank you for your reply!

I’ll add that it’s not even always 30-50 per piece for me but per enchantment. The attack pool on weapons is so big you need luck to even stay inside 40 embers.

Some negative enchantments also feel so hard to get, like the “heavy roll only” on pants. I wasted like 80 to get that.

There are more examples, but ultimately I want better control over what enchantments I have.

Chafing off uses for embers would lighten the load to have more embers available for rolling, but it does not allow more control over re-rolling.
