Elemental Enchant/Gem Infusion Affix Rework Idea (Status Effect Affliction Consistency)

Most status effects are in my experience really difficult to actually apply, as of some testing & hearing from others in the official discord, that status effect affliction effectiveness is based on the elemental damage.

It’s mostly impossible to even apply any status effect by just normally attacking.

And offensive elemental based runics such as fire swipe/ice ram/lightning assault/plague strike are all dealt fully elemental, which is why It’s so easy to at least apply status effects with runics. 2h staves being the easiest weapons to apply with runics.

It gives me some sort of a rework idea for weapon elemental enchantment/gem infusion affix, which I’m not sure if it’s a good idea to implement or not, but ehh, here it goes:

Elemental gems clamped values can be increased for example from 5% - 15% to like, 15% - 30%.
While elemental enchantment affixes can be increased from ??% - 25% to ??% - 35% (not sure what minimum of enchantments are).

This sounds HUGE at the moment, because that would be a MAJOR damage boost as it sounds right now, heavily rivaling the spiked gem that increases physical damage, but here me out. I have an idea to balance this out.

Instead of adding these percentage damage numbers on top of the already existing damage numbers, it would work like this instead:

The base damage on the weapon it would usually display will be subtracted based on the percentage value of the elemental infusion/enchantment affix given, and adds the elemental damage in return.
Forgive me if I’m explaining this a bit complicated than it really is.

Left image shows how it currently functions as in patch 2.
While the right image shows how I imagine this rework.
(Added some extra paintings next to the damage numbers so it’s more clear. Tho off topic, I’d love to see this UI element in future updates too.)

In case the reworked affix naming on the right image is difficult to read, I’ve written it here again:
“Converts 21% of Damage Dealt to Cold Damage. ___(Frost is the wrong word, as it’s written on the right image)”.

To make it short: Elemental enchantment/gem infusion affixes sacrifices % of base damage, and adds % elemental damage based on base damage. Why base damage sacrifice? So we get a chance to at least apply the status effect once, instead of speed killing the enemy before even any status effects were applied. Not to mention the % clamped values increase I mentioned on top, which would otherwise be a huge damage increase.

The purpose of this rework is:

    • So elemental gems are more unique, instead of just damage increase that the spiked gem already does.
No point in using spiked gem, when I can just get more total damage WITH elemental status effect on top. So the only way to really increase damage is the spiked gem.
    • (Main Point) To be able to afflict status effect more consistent with normal weapon attacks, while retaining damage, before killing the enemy.
Which would hopefully also encourage more to use normal attacks too.
    • Same as point 2, but this one explicitly: Less elemental runic spam.

I understand that this might be a moderate rework, hence I’d ask what everyone thinks of the idea?
Remember: Effectiveness of afflicting status effects is purely based on elemental damage, but it’s just so low to even actually apply it, and would just end up killing enemies faster than actually applying status effects at least once.
I love the visuals of the elements and would like to find ways to apply them against enemies without rune spamming.

But yea. Thoughts?
