Cloud save issue

Screenshot of Steam notification:

I’ve been having a problem with Steam Cloud Sync since sometime after the last big patch. Every time I exit the game I get a notification from Steam that sync failed. Only with NRFtW. I can’t tell if it’s a game issue or a Steam one.

I am not getting any messages about save conflicts in-game like some others. I only get a ‘Cloud Sync Failed” notification when I exit the game completely. I have tried:

Turning off/on cloud sync for NRFtW.
Turning off/on cloud saves globally in Steam.
Creating a new character.
Creating a new realm.

  • Were you able to reproduce the bug?
    Always happens and is ongoing
  • Where did it occur?
    Exiting the game on Steam
  • Has it been reported before?
There have been similar threads, but I do not get the in-game save conflict message

You could Verify Your Game Files

(do you use any mods?)

is Steam in Offline Mode?

I appreciate the reply.

I have verified game files a few times, as well as uninstalled and reinstalled. I do not use mods and Steam is not in Offline Mode.

Turn off Steam cloud and play the game for a while then exit and Turn on Steam cloud and start the game.. I sometimes get to choose what savedata i want to use after i have turned on the steam cloud.

this process is a manual way to force Steam to recognize your latest local changes and re-upload them.

I will give that a try later tonight.

Played for several hours last night and turned on cloud saves again this morning. No luck unfortunately.

Sorry to hear that man, playing with steam cloud off is not an option for you?

All of this still sounds like a steam issue, have you found any help in that direction?

Silas

Yeah, I play on a home desktop PC but I travel a good bit so I also use portable devices and GeforceNOW. The cloud sync feature has been a lifesaver for me.

Outside of the usual “turn cloud saves off and then back on”, not much. My next idea was finding where the game keeps save data on my primary desktop, moving all realms/characters out to a temp folder and starting fresh. Maybe something happened to the files/folders themselves. This is still the only cloud save title that I’m having trouble with.

Thanks for the reply.

Ah gotcha.

Meantime I’ve also learned some new tricks.

After you have concluded a session, you can check here: Sign In if a cloud save has been made/updated when you signed of.
Apparently the game does when using a whisper, going to Main menu and somewhere around quest checkpoints.

Also this is the path for the save files:

  • %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Moon Studios\NoRestForTheWicked\DataStore

Choose the latest number in that folder (it represents the build/version of the game) and you’ll see all your files in there.

Two topics from his forum I’ve learned a lot from are:

They are not the same problem but maybe something is in there that might help you?

Also I’m not so sure it’s a Steam issue anymore, since we already have those mentioned problems you might as well have found another

I’ll be sure to follow your progress along, and update here if I find something that will aid you.

May the wind always blow in your back, as the sun dawns on thy path,

Silas

@Silas-Inservio-Pax Thx for your efforts

That explains why my tip wouldn’t work in this case. If you use more devices than one, im venturing into uncharted waters here.

There are fixes for this on other forums not specifically for nrftw, so i dont know if they would help, this problem is either connected to nrftw or steam or whatever it is..

Anyways i hope you get it solved :innocent:

-Edit: Oh one more thing i shouldn’t have said “play for a while” i should have said: play for 5 to 10 minutes or make a settings change or something that would require the game to save and then exit the game and turn on cloud save..

As i said there are fixes through other forums but i dont know if they will work but i will atleast leave some of them here as a copy paste..

If the forced master sync of steam cloud didnt work if done correctly where you did all in one go without restarting pc?

If the problem persist

Remember to start game and exit the game after these two steps.

  • Clear Download Cache: Go to Steam > Settings > Downloads and click Clear Download Cache. This logs you out from Steam and forces Steam to re-verify all cloud statuses upon login.

  • Repair Library Folder: Go to Settings > Storage, click the three dots next to the drive, and select Repair Folder

You also mentioned that you use multiple devices and geforce now

Dont do all these steps down below in one go and start the game afterwards! try one at the time and start the game with each new step. If you have problems with the GeForce NOW begin at the bottom of these four steps and go up

  • IPv6 Issues: Disabling IPv6 in Windows Network Settings often resolves stubborn Steam Cloud errors.

  • Open Command Prompt as Admin and type: ipconfig /flushdns press enter let it run. This can resolve handshake issues with Steam’s upload servers.

  • Firewall/Antivirus: Ensure Steam.exe is an exception. Sometimes firewall blocks the outgoing upload right as the game process closes.

  • Cloud Gaming (e.g., GeForce NOW): Make sure the Steam Privacy Settings are set to “Public” or “Friends Only” for Game Details so the cloud service can “see” the sync.

Since you mentioned NVIDIA GeForce NOW, remember that GFN is essentially a “cleanPC every time you launch.

After all this you can:

Verify Integrity: Right-click the game go to Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.

As a side note

Don’t Rush: At all cost try to avoid closing the laptop lid or exiting the Steam client immediately after quitting the game. Give it 10–15 seconds to finish the upload.

That is all i can say there is probably a dozen other possible fixes for this problem but it would require you to dive deep into other forums or reddit that isnt connected to nrftw. :innocent:

And i recommend going through steam Downloads Settings on all your devices and check if theres a setting that is on for the other devices but off on one or the other

Also check on all devices so that this is on “Enable Steam Cloud synchronization” in Steam Settings > cloud

Got it. Thank you for the detailed reply, will try these steps over the weekend. I appreciate it.

I’ll take a look at this also. Thank you for your help.

I don’t know which one did it, but I cleared the download cache and repaired the library and everything appears to be working now.

Thank you both for your help. I appreciate it.
