Client timeout (6) every 2 minutes

Hello,

First of all I appreciate the game and therefore I recommended it to a friend. We play it regularly the last couple weeks. But I have a serious problem and tried for days every solution that I found here in the forum and on other plattforms. The problem is even known, but nothing happend in the last six months in those topics.

The friend created a shared world in which he can without a problem join, play and leave. I can see and join this shared world, but if he isn’t in the realm, I get kicked out of it in exactly 2 minutes with the error “Client timeout (6)” or without any information after a short “attempt to reconnect”. If he, the friend, IS in the shared realm and plays normally, I can join and play, but every 2 minutes I get “attempt to reconnect” with the only difference, that it works up until the next 2 minute mark. There is no noticeable lag or stutter, just plain “attempt to reconnect” and then play along. My nearest City is Frankfurt so the latency is about 30 to 40 ms to the Netherlands (EU).

With the ressource monitoring app from windows I could see, that normally it looks like this (windows in german language: send/receive):

Inbetween Reconnects

But after the reconnection attempt it looks like this:

I would describe it like my client screams in every direction, that it really is here but only if the other player is on the shared realm.

I could recreate this problematic behaviour

  • with two other tested shared worlds (one from me, one from another device/family shared account);
  • with and without VPN, different VPN services, different routing locations etc.;
  • with WIFI and Ethernet connection;
  • with and without “start the programm with administrator” with the game.exe and steam.exe;
  • with and without steam or nvidia overlay;
  • different graphic settings;
  • restarted the router, twice;
  • verified game files: a few times, 100% correct;
  • checked firewall, tried even with deactivated firewall: no difference;
  • checked DNS configuration (automated by the router).

Singleplayer on private realm works flawlessly.

Of course, there are probably variables in my house, that could be the cause, but everything possible for now and as far as I know has been checked.

Here is a google-doc-link to all the requested files (logs, DataStore.zip, dxdiag.txt and more). In Player-prev.log are my last attempts without the help from the friend and in Player.log the time with the friend on his shared realm. You can clearly recognize the time stamps between those reconnects: roundabout 2 minutes. There are more errors, that I can’t interpret.

Once again I really appreciate the game and I’m really hyped about the release, but until then it would be awesome, if I could play with my friend without every 2 minutes headaches.

Best regards,

PCGamer

If you are using windows 11 you should also be looking at recent Windows 11 updates, there are atm a few recurring culprits known to cause periodic connection drops, handshake failures, and session timeouts.

It could match the rigid 2-minute interval and packet symptoms that you described?

Im not ruling out that the game might be part of the problem but it could very well be a mix.

Hey PCGamer, appreciate the extensive report, and the troubleshooting! And the files!

Don’t see an Ace that often :wink: .

I will forward this into the proper channels, hopefully this can be identified and fixed.

Silas

Hi Silas,

thanks for the quick response and acknowledgment, especially on weekend. Our play sessions are every thursday. If something changes, I will report it.

I could add, that the only games with the same description of my problem, which I have found on other forums/plattforms, are Phasmophobia and R.E.P.O. I don’t have these games, but tried the proposed solutions and workarounds as written as in my first post.

@askan94 Thanks for the hint. I searched for latest updates and possible problems with Windows 11 updates, but nothing seems to fit to my problem. It would also be strange, that only No Rest for the Wicked is affected by that update. Other games, especially ARPGs and permanently connected multiplayer games that I play, are not affected. For now this is the first occurance of such a problem on this (and the other) PCs (in the household).
