I completely agree with the proposal and I don’t quite understand the arguments against it. This time, I don’t understand my friend @Chemile0n position. If a player wants to try new weapons, it’s because they’re experimenting with the game and trying to decide which combat style they like best, nothing more. Those supposed players who reassign stat points over and over again in a compulsive way without ever committing to a playstyle, I believe, if they even exist, are isolated cases. On the other hand, it’s easy to find players who want to try 3–4 weapons in their first playthrough before deciding how they want to play NRFTW. But the thing is, when doing this in their first game and not knowing how to unlock re-spec, their stat point distribution becomes a burden. The first contact with this game punishes weapon experimentation and forces you to stick with the starter sword and shield or the first random weapon obtained via RNG. That, or hold off on spending stat points until you have a clearer idea of your preferred combat style!
In my opinion, every player stabilizes their character once they find the weapon and playstyle they enjoy. That’s why I say: for those of us who don’t need re-spec from an early stage—myself included—because we have enough experience in these types of games and can easily figure out how we want to play, why deny new players the chance to experiment with different weapons and choose their combat style without penalty? I’m sure that once they find it, their character will become more stable and loyal to their chosen weapon.
I believe re-spec should be available in the Crucible from the start. For casual players to get stuck due to a poor stat allocation and be punished like this by the game is, in my opinion, the biggest mistake the game makes with new players.
I completely agree — locking respec behind Breach (Crucible) progression feels a bit off. The difficulty scaling in each level means you’re practically forced to create a build specifically optimized for Breach just to survive, especially since failing sends you back to the beginning. Requiring 5 full levels to unlock the respec statue feels overly punishing for anyone who’s already struggling due to an imperfect build.
Personally, I’ve ended up creating multiple characters just so I can have one that’s tailored for Breach and others for different playstyles. I don’t mind making different characters — I actually enjoy it — but the lack of a way to adjust a few attributes on the fly really limits flexibility.
Sometimes I just want to shift a few points to increase my equipment load or boost HP to better match a weapon or armor I’ve found, but right now I’m locked out of that unless I grind through a system that my current build isn’t equipped to handle.
I love this game, I’m genuinely addicted to it, and I respect the difficulty — I don’t want things to be “easy.” But I do think there’s room to make respec more accessible without removing the sense of reward. Maybe unlocking it earlier in Breach (like level 2 or 3), or tying it to a different progression path altogether, would be a good middle ground.
I’m glad you see where i’m coming from. I am not proposing re-spec without penalty. Just asking to make it more accessible. Like maybe changing the amount or type of currency that can be reasonably obtained by characters from all levels and build.
“Sometimes I just want to shift a few points to increase my equipment load or boost HP to better match a weapon or armor I’ve found, but right now I’m locked out of that unless I grind through a system that my current build isn’t equipped to handle.”
This is the frustration that i am facing right now too. Like you, i am forced to created another character just so i can hopefully put it in the right stats this time.
“I love this game, I’m genuinely addicted to it, and I respect the difficulty — I don’t want things to be “easy.””
I don’t want it to be easy too and i am pretty sure alot of players don’t want it to be easy too. Most players just want QoL features and challenging yet fair combat.
“tying it to a different progression path altogether, would be a good middle ground.”
This is what i am proposing since the beginning, a middle ground. I don’t understand what the opposition is when i am seeking a middle ground where we can all get what we want.
However you aren’t forced to have the required amount of points spent to equip a weapon anymore so you can atleast experiment and try the weapon.
You can equip any weapon without restrictions the only limiting factor is that the DMG is lower but you can still try the weapon to your hearts content.
Armors only have the lvl restrictions.
You dont have to respec your character to try a weapon?
It doesn’t seem very useful to test a weapon that turns out to be dysfunctional in combat because the stat points aren’t appropriate.
The only thing you gain from that is seeing the animations. You don’t know the damage, nor its effectiveness, and if you wanted to check it, surprise, respec is locked behind the Crucible
Testing the animations means alot because there are some weapons that you can’t animation cancel out from which can kill you unless they are timed correctly.
If you wanted to progress the story SURPRISE it’s locked behind Bosses.
How is this any different from unlocking respec in the crucible?
-Edit: At the moment it’s good as it is so let the devs work on their priorities and pick another time for these changes its good that you share your wishes but do so without putting pressure on them to fix it right away.
u can do that once you found your first fallen ember and a hand full of coppers. enchant said armor piece, use ember from inventrory, re-roll enchantment to “reduced weight” or “increased HP”. problem solved. that people even think they need respec to solve this problem is exactly the issue i have! respec does not help the players! it causes them to never really interact with or think about certain mechanics. sometimes humans need to be forced to think on their own about how they can solve a problem. if your problem is solved by throwing money in a machine, then u will never learn or understand what the actual problem was or how u could have solved it otherwise.
this “sometimes i want to change A tho and other times B” is exactly why i think this does NOT fit the overall theme of the game. Nobody ever said in a fromsoft game for example that they need to respec, or in monster hunter everyone is just fine with changing skills and stats with changing and upgrading armor pieces.
if u can just change everything at any time, you never have to actually make a choice. it make the whole leveling system completely obsolete. just remove all requirements from weapons, so everyone can use anything all at once.
i want choices to matter. besides. are u ever, like honestly ever really brooting and thinking about your build optimization when u just switch 3 stat points here and there. do u guys really think think that would help with understanding the importance of enchantment synergies, upgrade levels etc?
Simple: you can’t get stuck just because you don’t understand or experiment with the narrative thread of the story. If you’re not progressing in the story, the story itself isn’t the reason. In fact, maybe the reason you’re stuck in a boss fight is because the player has a poor stat distribution.
I know this is a forum, but it’s surprising how some people reply with nonsense using an arrogant tone
I didn’t respond with an arrogant tone but this is going to sound arrogant of me because you sound very arrogant by saying:
“I know this is a forum, but it’s surprising how some people reply with nonsense using an arrogant tone”
You talk like you deserve special treatment..
A funny thing to make of notice here tho is that I actually replied to You by mistake the reply was meant for someone else from the start but I’m not going to name any names.
It was a fun conversation so therefore I’m not going to apologize for my little mistake.
Make sure you help more ppl in the community as you’ve always done!
