Backstab not triggering (even with skull)

Same here. It’s as someone else noted, the models don’t match the hitbox. That’s how some mobs even aggro as you’re sneaking right behind them out of sight range.

The only time I can get backstabs is when I stagger an enemy and can run behind them.

I’m +1/upping this thread, because I reported this same bug on the Discord server by posting a video that shows that no matter how I try to position myself perfectly behind the enemy, the skull icon never pops up and thus I can’t backstab - if I press X on the gamepad, a normal attack is executed.

Since I can’t upload clips directly on this forum, I’ll leave here the link to the Discord message with the video: Discord

I’d like to point it that this happens more often than not, roughly 4 out of 5 times, I tried to see if there was any common pattern to it but to no avail.

Moreover, it seems that this “no backstab available” bug happens even during combat, tried to stagger enemies and position myself perfectly behind, but nope, no backstab.

playing on PC with an xbox controller, tried both with and without xbox controller input
cannot backstab with controller, works with KBM

Excellent report cacitdrawer!

Can you also name your controller model just for good measure?

I will forward this.

It’s a Gamesir Cyclone 2 used with its own app

*xbox controller layout, not xbox controller, apologies
*tried both, with & without steam controller input

If you play with mouse after the latest big update Together and all patches you can backstab only if you are in walk mode. Switching to run mode disables backstab. To reproduce this problem just stand behind the mob in the beginning of the game at the shallows and toggle run and walk modes. Please return backstabbing while in run mode!

The same problem with jumping on mobs from the structures to attack while in the air. If you are in walk mode it is working. If you toggle to run mode you just land next to the mob. Air attack is disabled. Very easy to reproduce, please fix this for players using mouse!

Thank you for the detailed report Aleksandras_Patapas,

I have verified for myself too that you are correct.

I will forward this towards the proper channels.

I can’t count the number of times I have sneaked up behind an unaware enemy and either there was no skull, or when the skull does show I get a regular attack instead. It feels completely random when I actually do get a backstab (pretty much only by accident) and it feels unrealistically unfair when I’m hidden behind an enemy and still can’t do it.

I only started playing on the free weekend and bought the game almost immediately, so I have no idea how the backstab used to work, but if this was a deliberate nerf why would you even leave the mechanic in the game? It’s not fair to tell players they can do something if you actually make it impossible. Unless it’s a weird desynch issue, and the enemy is standing idle at a different angle than they appear? I can’t think of any reason why sneaking up on an enemy should not result in a backstab.

Yeah that’s interesting.

I’m thinking it might be due to different resolutions as well? Or as you say, desyncs but in my local play I never really have trouble either.

If you can please screenshot or clip this once or twice? That would be a very big help!

Hey Aleksandras, has this been solved for you in the mean time? We received a hotfix that should have fixed this.

Let me know!

In trying to narrow down the issue and capture footage, I have found out a few things. The biggest detail is that, not only does it depend completely on the enemy you are trying to backstab, but some enemies’ backstab windows are not aligned properly, or are extremely small.

I was only able to find the firepot throwing enemy’s backstab window after a parry, but I did find that this crossbow enemy has a crooked backstab window, as evidenced by the fact that he snaps to a different alignment when the backstab is performed.

But this enemy, for example, has a correct backstab window.

I am using the Gulikit Switch Pro controller.

It seems that, in many cases where I saw a skull and didn’t get the backstab, either my character or the enemy shifted by a pixel or so as I was pressing the attack button, causing the backstab window to move away from my current position.

Here is an example of the reverse, where I pressed attack when there was no skull but got the backstab anyways.

I’m not sure how helpful this will be. Honestly, as I was experimenting for this footage I learned a lot about why my backstabs were not working in the first place, and it comes down to me not understanding the mechanics behind it. Now that I see what’s going on I can get more consistent backstabs. It’s also possible that the hotfix resolved the main issue before I got this footage, since I only recorded this just now. There is still the issue of tiny/misaligned backstab windows, but that seems to be a separate issue?

Incredible detailed work Damius, thank you for that!

I don t find the archer that misaligned though, his animation tilts his back away but the icon is correctly showing up for where the back of his collision box is.

Third one you were correct that it can hinge on that pixel, but you can also see that the skull does show up when you hit him. It was just for a frame normal white between the 2 skull appearances.

Nonetheless, when Moon reads this I’m sure they will be helped by your footage!

Feel free to direct your talents to more of mechanics
