Wicked's Build System Is Unique, So The Game Needs A Unique Grind To Accomodate It

Mostly for the devs as a reminder but I welcome anyone else who wants to chip in their $.02. Soulslike this, ARPG-that isn’t the point of this post let me set the context:

Most Soulslike:

  • each weapon has a distinct moveset
  • single drop of same weapon
  • no affixes

ARPGs:

  • classes of weapons, shared movesets
  • multiple drops of same weapon
  • shit tons of affixes

Even when a game “blends” the soulslike & ARPG genre like Nioh did it completely kept the ARPG loot + build system, so the grind could mimic an ARPG and be perfectly fine.

Right now I’d say at best we have only an ARPG-esque loot/grind system but I think Wicked does need to actually innovate here. In an ARPG when you’re grinding for your IDK “Engineer” class you only need say the “cannon” weapon and that’s 1/14 weapon classes(like with Nioh). Every drop is a 1/14 chance to get the weapon you want even if it needs some modifications.

Wicked has this setup though:

  • S) each weapon has a distinct moveset
  • A) multiple drops of same weapon
  • A) shit tons of affixes

I know this is obvious to some people and definitely the devs, I’m just rephrasing this to point out that you got some things of this blend to be amazing, but the way we loot/grind is still just how an ARPG would do it and I’m not sure that lasts long term.

I’m not sure I understand your post. Are you speaking out over the defining term arpg that Moon Studios is holding up for the game?

I still am not sure how much Wicked even compares to arpg’s as a genre, I would much rather see them market it as a Isometric souls-like. The arpg subreddits (I know super flawed premise) do not take kindly to the game, because of a few things they really dont seem to like (timers, no screen blasting, pace of combat is much much slower etc).

If I am missing your point, could you elaborate a little bit more about what you would want Moon to do with this IP?
