Unarmed combat is an interesting gameplay option, but I would like to see it as an explicit “opt-in” system on the inventory paper doll screen, rather than the implicit version we have now where every unfilled main hand or offhand slot is automatically assigned as “unarmed”. Maybe press L3 or R3 or something while hovering over an empty slot to opt in to “unarmed” assignment for that slot?
The specific case I’m addressing is where a player has two primary main hand weapons they swap between as part of their build, but the third (empty) “unarmed” weapon slot remains on their dpad weapon cycle. In this case (two “weapons assigned” slots plus a third empty slot), I’d prefer to have the empty slot omitted altogether from the dpad quickswap cycle. If a player specifically wants to use unarmed combat, let them opt in to assigning “unarmed” to the dpad quickswap cycle explicitly.
