Credit goes to @askan94 . I just reproduced and recorded.
Use a mottled gem in a shield which does damage while blocking. Start blocking, and while blocking, swap to a torch. The damage continues ticking even though you no longer have the shield equipped.
Thank you. The damage stops if switching to another shield, I assume, just not for the torch?
(I never realised the gems worked this way. Should’ve tried them! I’ll see how it interacts with enchantment power. I’m sensing a way to get an unintended number of simultaneous pulses. I’ll also check the offhand crossbow just for fun.)
At least I got an easy trigger for shatters on frozen enemies out of it, and to enable bleed-based lifesteal. (And, with thanks to @askan94, a convenient way to clear pots in the Crucible.)
Easy shatter? I thought all those while blocking gems were elemental and you needed physical to shatter. Wouldn’t you also want to shatter with your biggest physical attack? I have a frost build where I use big one hit rune attacks on ice breaker and they slap. I’m not exactly sure what happens when you shatter, but it seemed to me like it doubles your attack damage, so you’d want to use a physical attack that slaps hard.
Bleed is physical. The mottled spike should do physical damage in AoE.
There are edge cases in which a fast, free shatter might be more desirable, such as using (focus-generating) freeze attacks to set up a big elemental rune, but not wanting the damage of that rune to be reduced by frozen armour.
(I’ve always found the interaction of bleed and ‘elemental’ boosts intransparent. There is a bleed rune on double daggers, which next to blade oil is a neat trick for physical damage with an elemental weapon.)
