Alright I’ve got 10-ish hours into the game and I’m starting to get a grip on the systems, even the ones I’m not so fond of. However, I’m noticing a few more gripes I have with what’s arguably the most important thing in the game: combat.

Lining up a backstab is… weird, to say the least. I’m playing a thief-type build so I’ve got experience with some backstabbery. And to be honest, It just feels bizarrely inaccurate at times. Not like it’s too hard, but more so that it isn’t always lined up properly. And sometimes when it is it just… doesn’t work? Now this could be because of the enemy changing position in the slightest, but it still feels off-putting regardless. Now all of this could be an issue on my end, as the game is unfortunately very unstable on my 3060. If anyone has different experiences with this one let me know. Oh, and someone let me know if the performance gets any better.

Knocking enemies down makes me sad. This one is pretty simple. Once in a while an enemy who thinks they’re real tough stuff will beat me to the floor. Sometimes I can dodge out of their follow-up swing, sometimes they beat me to the punch. That’s not the part I have a problem with, as frustrating as it may be. My real issue comes from when I do the knocking down-- as I just can’t capitalize on it. No bonus damage to deal, no satisfying finisher to be dealt. Hell, from my experience I don’t even think enemies can be damaged after knocking them over. Am I doing something wrong here or am I really supposed to just let these guys get back up?

There’s no such thing as stealth. Now that’s a pretty bold and totally hyperbolic statement, but one I’m probably not the first person to say. But seriously, these guys have some serious eagle-eyes-- to the point where they can see me before I can see them, all the way from off-cam. Now maybe the camera is to blame here, but as much as I wish I could zoom it out or even rotate it (yeah, as if that’ll ever happen) the enemies feel at fault as of now. All I’m saying is that unless one of these guys is hiding behind a barrel or deliberately positioned to swoop in for an ambush, I should be the one detecting them first. And maybe have them lose that unending aggression after a little while if I can get away, If sneaking away can’t work, at least running away should.

Attributes are so BORING. This one isn’t entirely a combat thing but let’s roll with it anyway. Look I like the idea of some weapon damage being amplified by tangentially-related attributes-- but that can’t be all they do. Why not have each attribute have some sort of bonus that every character, regardless of weapons equipped, can take advantage of? What if dexterity made you use consumables faster? What if intelligence raised poise or something because you’re smarter now? What if equip load just wasn’t a stat of it’s own like seriously why?? I have no reason to put points into almost half the attributes because they don’t matter solely because I’ve been sticking to one weapon/build type. And even so equip load is just a spiteful deity I have to spend a few points to appease just so I can stay lightweight if my equipment isn’t always thief-approved.
