Are the developers thinking about creating public servers? Right now, they’re just for friends. I was thinking about a multiplayer mode with more than 4 players too.
The 4 players has been mentioned as a hard limit, due to engine/world limitations.
If more were allowed, they’d have much difficulty presenting the crispyness and responsiveness that you have currently.
Thomas did mention a guest system however, but we don’t know if that will expand the limit to 5.
Hope this answers your question, set up a feedback topic if you want to make a case for more players!

I hope we can play with random people.
I think the whole point of the multiplayer is to make a real together experience and don’t put this game into a fastfood multiplayer like monster hunter with sos flare (that killed the social experience this game had before).
But, I have to admit that it’s a bit too much to need steam friends to play together. It’s like puting the consequence before the cause. We should be able to play with random and then become friend afterward.
It’s really great to make friends thanks to a game. I still have friends from the old MH games 13 years later but I made zero friends on the new ones (because of the new “fast food” mechanic).
I think that the perfect balance would be to make it like the old monster hunter games. The best way would be to make the realm in 3 different ways:
- offline realm (solo)
- online private (only with steam friends)
- online public (random can join)
Then you just put some filters on public realm, for exemple:
- Max level (to play with same level player)
- Goal (crucible, pestilence, story, farming ressource, PvP…)
But that mean that the numbers of realm you can play in should be limited because public realm risk to make the number of realm increase very quickly and maybe ruin a bit the performance (maybe 5 realm max per account?).
I think it’s a good compromise to make this game a good multiplayer experience and give the possibility to make new friends.
(Sorry for my bad english)
Oh and btw, I don’t think we should increase the numbers of players per realm. 4 is already more than enough. 4p fight are a bit chaotic sometime, especialy compare to 2p which is perfect imo.
Most games I have seen in this position rely on discord or reddit to find people to play with.
Discord in particular is great for having multiple free use voice chat rooms to mingle and party up with.
I am pretty sure that the game can support up to 5 or 6 players.
Having a couple more of players doesn’t weigh so much as you and he think..
