Since the Wicked Together update, all realms are being created online. There is a local copy as well, but the only way to force the game to use it is to cut the game’s connection to the Internet. This is inconvenient and tedious.
Please introduce a proper offline mode. Here are some suggestions for it:
- respect the Steam settings that disable Steam Cloud. Currently the game ignores that. When Steam Cloud is disabled by the user you shouldn’t use it
- add an option during realm creation to create an offline realm. This is most flexible and allows you to give the user a warning that such a realm cannot be played with others
- add a global setting in the game options to switch the entire game to offline mode. That’s not flexible but better than nothing
- add a game launch argument (e.g. --offline). Less dangerous than a global setting in-game as it cannot be accidentally set by inexperienced users, and still useful to advanced users
- patch the game to be able to run in an empty network namespace. Currently the game crashes which doesn’t make sense for a game that allows you to play offline. To reproduce on Linux, set the Steam launch options to “unshare -r -n %command%”
I would greatly appreciate it if you implemented any or all of the above. I assume some of those would be trivial to do as that’s how the game used to work before the Together update.
