@cNFenix This works for me, but I’m also using Proton GE-Latest so I wonder, maybe that’s the reason why it works for me, and not the others… Can you try that and report back if it works for you too?
Downloaded and installed Proton GE along with all the settings suggested turn on and it worked! Just for safe measure turned off and test other proton layers and only GE worked. Which is just weird since the other Proton layers did not - you would think there isn’t that much of a difference… But hey at least it worked and is fixed for now. Thanks again to you both for the assistance!
Thanks for confirming @cNFenix
That’s because ProtonGE uses the latest dxvk and wine instructions, and is generally recommended over the regular Proton versions.
I also edited my solution to also recommend ProtonGE in case just the command alone doesn’t work.

I had the same problem running the game in a Lenovo Legion Go S with SteamOs
This code SteamDeck=0 command solved the problem
Hey, I can’t play this game on my steam Os device because the 1980x1200 resolution is not available in settings so it’s very unfortunate.
It will be a good addition.
I deleted my last post because a typo, but I made it work after downloading the latest ProtonGE release trough the “Wine Cellar’“ Decky plugin, applied it to the game (with the command above) and the correct 1920x1080 resolution appeared. Hope it works!
Hi,
I’m using proton GE latest and I’ve added the launch command but unfortunately max resolution is still 1920*800. I don’t understand why but solutions offered here do not seem to work.
The fact that it works for some people, but not for everybody, means one thing.
We have a problem.
What could be the problem?
- User error -For instance, a small typo somewhere, or even a blank space where it shouldn’t be, or improperly installed add-ons(Proton, Steam, etc.)
- Linux driver, kernel, or other software issue -Unfortunately this will be extremely hard to pinpoint, like for example, is Steam really taking advantage of the launch command? Are you really on the latest Mesa driver? Is any compatibility issues with your hardware/os combo? etc, etc, the with unknowns can only go up.
I’m sorry that it doesn’t work for everyone, obviously.
But the reality of things is such that no matter for how many people it actually works, including me, there will still be quite a few others for which it wont seal the deal.
For those who do -You are welcome.
For those who doesn’t -You may need to do some extra digging, unfortunately.
1st thing you might wanna do, is simply look for any missed steps, typos, or installation issues with either the game, steam, or any of the plugins.
If everything’s looking good, then look at the system, game, or steam logs, to try and find what’s going on when you launch the game.
Under Linux, the place to look for those is usually found in
~/.local/share/Steam/logs
or /var/log
Try and check the logs and see if you can find any smoking gun there, if not, try and share them with the community, see if somebody else might find something weird instead…
In conclusion, until we actually get a Linux native client for the game, there will pretty much always be a set of issues that may occur every now and then, and there will always be workarounds, and “fixes” that doesn’t really do justice to all.
A bit of free “poetry” from my side on the subject… ![]()
We are the so-called, and self proclaimed “early adopters” on the Linux gaming side of things, and some of us already knew what we were signing up for… It’s nearly there, but it’s still far from perfect regardless of how much I actually prefer it over the other alternatives.
Truth need to be said, Although it’s IMO "better”, I can’t stay blind to all the quirks related to it, and that’s just one of the examples.
When Linux native version is released, we may have a different set of issues, I’m fully aware of this, and thats absolutely normal, but until this happens, behind every workaround, there’s always a small chance of failure simply because of the complexity of how this systems actually work, and though how many translation layers these instructions are been translated, so that it could actually work on Linux.
Layers on top of layers, on top of more layers of binary data translated from one piece of code to another. DirectX to Vulkan, NtFS to Ext4 or BtrFS, etc. etc.
I’m having a similar issue although I’m playing on windows. I use an ROG Ally X on windows and connected to an egpu and monitor. My screen is 4k. If i use the full screen window option, the resolution only goes as high as 1920x1080 16:9. Any suggestions would be welcomed. Thank you.
Just wanted to add some additional feedback here, this issue is also occurring on the Valve SteamMachine running the latest stable 3.8.14 SteamOS build.
Firstly I set the Game Resolution setting in the Steam Game menu from Default (1920x1080) to 3180x2140. I then tried using the SteamDeck=0 %command% launch option, this didn’t fix it. I have also tried different proton versions as listed; default, proton experimental, proton hotfix, proton 11 (beta), protonGE 11-1, protonGE 10-34.
Just to be super clear, I’ve tested all of these proton builds both with and without the launch option. In ALL cases the max resolution I was able to set was 1920x800 [21:9] or 1368x768 [16:9].
Hope this helps, would be great to get this resolved.
Hi,
I just did a clean install of SteamOS 3.8.14 and I haven’t even bothered getting Proton GE, yet i used ‘SteamDeck=0 %command%’ in the launch option, and I now have 1920x1080 from the resolutions option in game.
Check for hidden symbols in the command, especially if copied from somewhere, and also check for typos and extra spaces.
This has been working for my 3 systems without any issues, ever, so something is wrong elsewhere.
Fresh Steam Machine user here, and I hate to echo lombers’ experience, but same here. I wonder if its something in the project checking for which hardware platform the game is being played on, I know in games I’ve made I can check for iOS / Android / Mobile / Steam etc whatever.
My friend has SteamOS installed on an AMD mini ITX build and he had no issue. My desktop, no issue. But Steam Machine is just being forced to Steam Deck, I can only assume its not a strict enough gate in the hardware string somewhere where it just thinks whatever hardware its being played on, if it contains ‘steam’ set Steam Deck specific limitations. Thats my guess, anyway. I could be super wrong.
Another new Steam Machine user, and unfortunately it’s a
1 from me on both lomber and CalamityDornard’s experiences.
Have tried the SteamDeck=0 %command% launch option (and the glyphs are correct, there’s no incorrect spacing characters, etc.), but it’s still showing a max resolution of 1920x800 for me (and similarly, my Game Resolution max is set to 3180x2140).
Given Evil1nside’s experience, it does very much feel like this is a HW identification issue?
It may in fact be some hardware and/or driver specific thing…
Either way, these are proton specific commands and they should work regardless of the fact.
My suggestion is to open an issue in SteamOS github, and hopefully this can be traced and figured why these proton launch options are not working on a valve hardware.
One extra node here, as “GameMode” and “Desktop Mode” are using 2 different compositors, and in order to narrow the issue down as much as possible, have you also tried launching the game from Desktop Mode as well?
If it behaves the same way with and without the launch option, then the issue is not the compositor, and if it works properly in desktop mode, but not in game mode, then that would be a great find.
I tried in GameMode and Desktop Mode, both return the same results. 1920x800 max resolution, basically just SteamDeck mode. Even the “Identify to the game as running on a Steam Deck” is checked off (by default even), toggling it on and off makes no difference.
SteamDeck=0 %command% - no change
That toggle above- no change
Desktop mode vs GameMode- no change
EDIT: Tried Various Proton options- GE newest, GE 10.29, Proton Experimental, Hotfix, 11 anything- no change (sometimes the game just didn’t load but I’d assume thats just a random Proton I was trying)
Steam Machine is just being seen as a Steam Deck for whatever reason. I can only imagine its a string.contains check somewhere that is gating too hard on a hardware check. No other game in my library that I’ve tested so far seems to have any issues differentiating Steam Deck from the Steam Machine / SteamOS.
Considering it works fine on SteamOS on custom set ups, I can only assume what we have here is some sort of hardware / platform check leftover from pre-machine era where a Steam Machine = Steam Deck.
That’s an interesting theory which may in fact be the case here.
Please open an issue in SteamOS github page so that it can be traced.
I can think of 2 other games which had issues if this launch command is not used.
One of them is Mortal Kombat 1, where you will only be limited to medium present and no advanced options available, and the other is Expedition 33, again, without any advanced video options available, and only limited to some SteamDeck “optimized” presets.
Do you have any of those 2 and willing to test them as well?
Shoot, I don’t have either game on Steam. Hopefully someone else on this thread does though!
