Man, I’m extremely happy with the update. I made a bold statement to my friend saying that this is literally the game I dreamed of several years ago and explained how every detail is how I envisioned it. However, it seems like there’s a missing piece.
A piece that made Baldurs Gate 3 go from an S+ tier game to an SSS+ for me.
… Local Split Screen Coop.
And oh boy. If this game has this, It’s OVER GUYS!
I saw a little experiment by T. Mahler where he saw the game in third person. And it was simply very interesting to say the least.
Anyway, I think a lot of people are being greatly surprised by the quality and shape that the game is taking. I did a new playthrough after “The Breach” and was impressed with the expansion of the two new areas, mechanics and quality of life added to the game. ‘Refined’ improved even more.
The game is simply going to become God Tier in the gaming world! Like Ori, that has a legendary fame. NRFTW It’s simply going to be great!. Now with this masterpiece in our hands. Let’s make some noise and hope for ‘SPLITSCREEN COOP’ .
THE PEOPLE DEMAND SPLIT-SCREEN!

WE REPEAT: WE WANT SPLIT-SCREEN!

…
Jokes aside, guys. The game is incredible. Whatever content awaits us, I’m anxiously awaiting it, I really trust in your work. Congratulations again. The game is getting incredible!
For others if they are interested in the 3rd person camera experiment:
I don’t think local split screen is coming, because that would require the PC to run almost 2 instances of the game, and most machines struggles to just run 1 instance
But agree, local split screen would be awesome, so would the 3d person camera, but I don’t think we should bet on any of them.
Coop wouldn’t really be coop if we had splitscreen, right?
and top downs are super dependent on how much you can see in combat and just splitting that in half you’d be just blind to everything, no matter if its vertical or horizontal split screen.
sure you could zoom out a a bit more, but the aspect ratio would still be different… they already account for enemies to not attack you when thy are offscreen, so aspect ratio in that sense isn’t that big of a deal. but then again the whole game and layout is made for the 16:9/10 aspect ratio, meaning enemies could be out of reach for you but still aggro, or you could cheese enemies, where you couldn’t before.
Also. enemies should get easier/harder, when you fight them alone/with friends, right? You could have one super strong buffed up player, fighting a bosse alone and in the last minute people could join and get extra loot or sth.
All of that could still be accounted for. it’s just another “do we have enough time/money for that”.
But what would actually kill this endeavour - is definitely performance - as @rallianto already mentioned. Especially when you have to zoom out and have to display even more of the world to compensate for the difference in aspect ratio…
So in summary you would have very little benefit for a lot of pains to fix just to add splitscreen. I’d say enjoy single screen coop with your partner/friends/family and give them more time and resources for other amazing features, that would make the game INCLUDING coop even better
Yeeeees, totally valid points. I imagined those factors myself. But, it doesn’t hurt to dream, right? hehe c:
After I saw the third-person video, I remembered BG3 and its splitscreen and dreamed big. My brother and I have been talking about game design since we were teenagers. And nowadays, with much more knowledge, we are aware of how each little idea of this kind can make the game a nightmare to develop. Not to mention the time and resources to maintain the team.
That would be amazing but it won’t happen, sorry. They have talked about that on Discord. The engine it’s very demanding and they are struggling with optimization with a single screen already. The game can’t render two screens at a single time.
The closest it could get is shared screen (not split). But they haven’t talked about that at least on Discord or podcasts atm.
