[Linked] Hardcore Character Lost Due to Floor Glitch in Sacrament "The Manor"

Hi No Rest for the Wicked Support Team,

First of all, I want to say that I really love your game and have been playing it a lot — especially in Hardcore mode.

Unfortunately, I just experienced a serious bug that caused my Hardcore character to die unfairly.

While inside my mansion in Sacrament (the 35S house), I was jumping down the stairs when my character suddenly fell through the floor and out of the map. I kept falling endlessly below the realm with no way to recover.

I tried to quickly Alt+F4 to avoid dying, but I was too late. When I logged back in, my character was no longer allowed in the Hardcore realm, meaning it was counted as a death.

This is extremely upsetting because I lost a character with around 50 hours of playtime, level 25, and strong gear.

I understand the risks of Hardcore mode, but this was not caused by combat, disconnect, or player mistake — it was a clear map/floor glitch inside my home.

I don’t have a video clip of the exact moment, but I have managed to reproduce the same situation but with a level 1 char and clipped it. This is the link to the clip : Unique Download Link | WeTransfer
I am attaching my logs and I hope you can confirm what happened through them. Here is the link : Unique Download Link | WeTransfer

I am also a member of your discord, so if you need more information or anything i can also join a voice channel and stream where the bug exactly happened for more information. Just let me know!

Is it possible to restore my Hardcore character so I can continue playing? I would greatly appreciate any help, as this death was caused entirely by a bug.

Thank you very much for your time and support.

Kind regards,
Imad / Imanozx

damn bro that sucks.

The pains of EA, huh? :wink: (I think that happened to me too as well once…)

Maybe the modders can create a tool for that. you could ask in the discord. or you can look for mods online, see if there is a character editor of some sort…

hmm maybe there are character backups that you can restore.
this mod here kinda inspired it:

https://www.nexusmods.com/norestforthewicked/mods/2

(Disclaimer: i have no idea if this is the right approach or will actually work. You should deifnitely ask in the discord and find a modder that is willing to help)

Or you could try to figure out where you character backup files are, if they are and then try which one still has the hardcore “tag”… (Make backups of the backups if you do)

Hi there !,

I was not aware modding was a thing. I was trying to beat the game on hardcore Vanilla, before even looking into modding. I added a link of the data storage in my post and i am hoping my character is in it somewhere. I did not know i could make backup of it. I am hoping the official team can restore it without me having to mod or anything, because it just does not feel vanilla anymore then, or maybe i am wrong. I appreciate your tips and i will look into it, thank you !

Yeah, but as I mentioned, that is just the pain of EA. Stuff like that will happen and they will not be fixed instantly, because the devs have a lot on their plate and different priorities than any of us^^.

So to get the best bang out of your EA buck, I suggest using mods to be prepared for situations like this, or you just accept the rough edges of EA.

Maybe you can also make the realm not be hardcore anymore if that is easier, so you can get back into it at least and still treat it like a “hardcore” realm.

If you want to get started yourself, you can use MelonLoader and UnityExplorer, or again, ask someone that knows the stuff in Discord, because the learning curve is pretty steep.

Yeah, that is understandable and I know it probably wont be fixed instantly, but I would rather wait and discuss it with the dev team to find solutions together than improvising myself.

Hello @imanozx , welcome to the forum. If your realm is local (single player), there are indeed character backups that you can restore without any mods or tools. However, you must be comfortable with navigating your directories, renaming files and searching for text inside files. It is also very important that you have not played at all with that character since it died.

If you are fine with the above, and with the risk of something going wrong and losing that character forever, and of ruining the joy of hardcore, here are the steps to revive it:

  • find the game’s current build number. It is displayed in the top right corner in the main menu (e.g. 26973);

  • open your file manager and navigate to %APPDATA%/LocalLow/Moon Studios/NoRestForTheWicked/DataStore/26973/. Search the internet for %APPDATA% if you want more info on that;

  • you will see a bunch of files with long names. Some will have “Character” in the name, others will have “Realm” in the name. Use your favourite tool to search inside those files (e.g. Notepad’s CTRL+F). Don’t be intimidated by the contents of the files when you open them. It’s normal they look weird. In the files with “Character” search for your char name (“DedAgen” it seems) and in the files with “Realm” search for your realm’s name. The goal is to see which UUID (the long string in the middle) corresponds to your char and which to your realm;

  • once you know the UUID, you will notice that there are some files that end with .bak1, .bak2,.. .bak5. Replace the char and realm files that have no .bak extention with one of those that have. For example:

76561198282458519_Character_0078d3ca-8e42-4aee-8345-81514f939100.cerimal.bak5 → 76561198282458519_Character_0078d3ca-8e42-4aee-8345-81514f939100.cerimal

76561198282458519_Realm_e2ceef4b-15ce-4f6b-b184-592cc5054d4a.cerimal.bak5 → 76561198282458519_Realm_e2ceef4b-15ce-4f6b-b184-592cc5054d4a.cerimal

I recommend using the oldest “bak” file to be sure you are restoring one where the character is likely to be alive;

  • stop your internet connection to avoid steam cloud (this is important);

  • start the game and your char should potentially now be alive again;

  • play for a short time, then exit the game, start your internet connection and restart the game;

  • when you start the character, a popup will appear asking which version to use - keep clicking on “local” until it all goes away

  • done

hello !, aah the realm is shared, so it is not just local :frowning: But i am the only one playing on it. I just started it with a friend who never played again. I have not played my char since it died because i only have HC Realm. I am fine with risking to lose my character. But is it still possible to change my realm to local?

I’m sorry, I don’t know much about shared realms. I doubt there’s anything that can be done in that case, but maybe someone else in the community knows.

Aah damn, well at least i want to thank you for trying!

You’re welcome. Sorry I couldn’t help in your case, but at least you know for your future local characters.

Yeah i guess, however i am going to give it up. I spend to much time and energy on multiple characters and this realm to lose my final character like this. Maybe i will give it a go again when the real version is released but for now i feel like its a waste of my energy to risk losing time and energy due to bugs like that without an option for restore. I appreciate all your efforts guys!

This has been escalated now imanozx, thanks for the report.

If you can pinpoint the exact location inside the house by making a screenshot of it, that would be all the more appreciated!

Hello, I have managed to reproduce where i died. It was near the stairs, a spot where i didnt know i could die. Here is the link to the clip i made where you can exactly see where it happened. Unique Download Link | WeTransfer

Is there any chance you could restore my hardcore character so i can continue playing it on my realm?

I’m sorry man, if the back-up didn’t work then I have nothing else to suggest :man_shrugging:

Thanks for following up with the clip!
