How does shields armor work?

Okay, this might me a silly question. But here i go.
So, shields doesnt actually give any armor when equiped. Is the whole blocking mechanic based on that armor being applied when you block? Is that what blocking is supposed to do?

Mainly asking since that’s fairly unclear then, atleast to me.

Not quite sure but it would seem that it gives 0 armor for just being equipped and only applies the armor if you block

While you’re blocking you get the bonus from the shield armor
