HDR turned on results in a washed out overbright image.
Tested on 2 different HDR monitors capable of 1000 nits+ which are calibrated and present HDR well in other games.
Turning off ingame HDR and using the Nvidia HDR though the Nvidia app works.

I have this issue too but only when running it Full-screen. Windowed Full-screen works fine (edit: not quite - sliders don’t seem to work except brightness - see additional comment I added to this thread)
It’s like it’s applying HDR twice in Fullscreen mode, so I’ll just turned it off in-game.
It seems in-game HDR setting is broken in fullscreen exclusive mode.
Started playing with default window/borderless just fine as far as HDR and display goes. Switched to fullscreen exclusive and immediately had the very washed out HDR. Not playable from a display state. And playing in window/borderless ends up putting my mouse onto my second monitor during fights which makes battles exponentially more difficult.
Seconding that I get washed out colors on hdr in fullscreen exclusive mode.
As an addition to this bug - HDR is not only washed in FUllscreen mode but only the brightness slider seems to actually do anything to change the picture but even that slider just seems to make the blacks look grey more than anything else.
HDR issues are on your PC, not the game. Try toggling HDR on and off. Try starting the game with Windows HDR off and see if you can activate HDR in game. Windows 11 HDR implementation can be buggy.
Do this too:
Go to device manager and select view: and select SHOW hidden devices.
Then go to MONITOR and delete all instances of monitors that are not highlighted. Every time your configuration changes, Windows will make a new installation for your monitor, and that is bad. You should only have 1 monitor in there, well unless you are using more than 1. Just delete/uninstall the greyed out monitors
Encountered this problem too. Fixed it by turning basic contrast and all HDR settings to 50%. Still exprience pretty bad color banding though. Any ideas about the latter?
This is incorrect information. The error is with the game not the PC. HDR on windows is not the cause washed out colours in full screen mode. The error in windows relates to detection of support for HDR. If the game is detecting that HDR is supported and is able to enable it in windowed mode then the issue is with the game’s full screen implementation.
But Usually it is just windows causing issues. I have had that washed out effect plenty of times and fixed it by using my methods posted above, and my tips for removing old monitor profiles is definitely something that everyone should check.
And, because I know how to troubleshoot HDR on Windows 11, No Rest for the WIcked HDR is perfect for me.
+1 on broken HDR on Fullscreen Exclusive and slider settings seem to not do anything (except brightness). Fullscreen Windowed seems fine, but Contrast and Richness sliders still not doing anything)
Thanks for this information - I did not know about the Device Manager/Monitor thing.
However, I tried the steps you mentioned and they do not resolve the issue for me unfortunately:
Tried restarting the PC too just in case there was something else going on.
I had this problem with Armored Core: Fires of Rubicon but that was an intermittent problem that would happen on occasion but NRFTW simply isn’t working at all in Full-screen mode and the sliders don’t seem to do much in windowed mode either.
It really wouldn’t surprise me if it was Windows 11 and not the game per se but for the moment I’m playing full-screen with HDR turned off.
Edit: Auto-HDR is switched off in the Win11 settings.
Apparently HDR only works in Widowed Full Screen right now, but those tips on removing the extra monitors is gold, especially if you use a TV with your PC.
Every few days I go in Device Manager to see if there are any new profiles.
I have a Sony 4k 120hz TV, and my video output would cause the TV not to pickup the video output because there were so many extra video profiles. Once I deleted all the extra profiles everything worked great.
Same issue, seems to be working OK in windowed full screen. Would be great to add this to know bugs, so that we know developers have seen this issue.
Aloha. I went into the game this morning and it appears HDR is now working in Full-screen mode. I turned it on and instead of becoming washed out it actually got a bit darker and the sliders now seem to work.
Hey person, congrats on getting it to work. It is a little strange as i updated and tried it right before writing this, am I understanding it correctly that you are saying that it works with exclusive full screen, and not windowed?
I am still washed out on exclusive, even if the slider works, it looks very very bad as compared to windowed full screen HDR or no HDR at all. I tried multiple ways of trying to get it to work.
I’m on a 4090 and all filters are turned off, i only have one tv connected, thought i have at some point had a different screen connected.
Hey. HDR has been totally borked since launch on Full-Screen exclusive making the screen washed out and grey the whole time so I’ve been playing with HDR turned off.
This morning I booted up the game after the update it it immediately hard crashed - I launched the game again via Steam. Not sure if this is relevant or not but it might be if the crash caused the re-verification of files or some nonsense.
I have a 3070Ti and my PC is rigged up to an LG OLED TV.
There were other folks talking about HDR working for them at launch but it’s only started working for me today.
Maybe re-installing it will work or verify the files via Steam?
Also, this advice is listed earlier in this thread:
