Hello Moon Team,
every evening i have latency issues, it goes up to 150-160ms. this causes rubberbanding and projectiles to sometimes disappear, animations to bug out or not play at all. overall a very poor gaming experience.
i tested it today to be sure and at 2PM i had 36-37ms and at 9PM i got 150-160ms.
i’ve had this problem consistently for a few weeks now. before that it worked perfectly fine, i could finish the entire campaign with a friend without issues. nowadays it’s almost unplayable in the evening.
i’m in germany connected via landline, no wifi, no VPN, no router issues, no problems in other games. today the PC was running the entire time, no background downloads (no windows update either since i’m on linux), no background streams, no other users in the house.
Arch Linux OS, no FPS drops or any other issues, the game works really well on linux so good job on that one. the latency problems are quite annoying though.
Since you have good ping at off-hours and bad ping at peak hours, it might be your ISP’s fault. Especially in densely populated or technologically outdated neighbourhoods, ISPs tend to sell over capacity, which becomes noticeable around 6 to 11 pm.
It’s especially common with Telekom and VDSL. Their routing/peering is also subpar at times. You may see improvements with a VPN. If you’re on VDSL and coax is an option, it may be better, but that’s a gamble based on your neighbourhood.
The only thing throwing me off is that other games are fine. Normally a huge increase like that is sure to be local node congestion or shitty routing. I’d probably consider a series of network speed tests followed, if appropriate, by a complaint to your ISP.
today the issue worsened. i was testing it again just now to have some consistency when it comes to daytime i got 85-95ms at 2PM. yesterday and the weeks before it was fine midday at around 30-40ms.
i did some testing with my ISP and there is little difference between day and evening/night, around 10ms difference which can’t reasonably amount to a latency spike going from 40ms to 150+ms. i added a screenshot and all the other servers have the expected latency considering the distance, only europe is completely off.
oh i forgot, i took another screenshot yesterday evening, here it is:
as you can see only the european server changes. this was the best ping i could get all evening, it went up to over 150ms afterwards as i mentioned earlier.
i’m located near munich.
Good testing. For comparison, this is from Germany as well:
Hong Kong is considerably worse in your picture as well, beyond what I’d expect from local differences. Now I’m sure it’s a routing/peering problem.
The next step would be to test with mtr -rw or compare against, for example, a VPN in the Netherlands. Both will tell you whether it’s a routing issue.
