I am coming from PoE and Diablo like games and I have heard that NRFTW would be a game that you create characters and take as much care for them as possible in order to survive.
When we add a Rogue lite/like, we remove this emotional link, we won’t mind to die over and over, we will be focusing on and solely on numbers, only on the game mechanics.
Well, this is not really a problem, but when the game tries to be what a ARPG really would be, it fails. PoE, Diablo and other titles fails either, because they focus on the game mechanics and as so they should be called anything but …RPG… , Roguelite with RPG mechanics in it would fit better.
This criticism is only for what was sold and what is being delivered. I am loving the game so far but got really frustrated that it is going to be a game that is not really a RPG.
I always criticized all ARPGs for the lack of immersions features like physics, inertia, IK, take the D4 and the new PoE, they all feel real until any character starts to run, changes direction and then stops, it brings a strong cognitive dissonance between the lifelike real characters and scenario and those basic animations and movements that feels like they just added the Unity’s CharacterController.
NRFTW looks better in this aspect, it lacks more inertia and gravity tunning, but is far better than PoE and D4.
