Allow blank/unassigned button mapping

Some background and a use case for this suggestion.

I’m a bow wielder using a controller, and sometimes in combat, I’m rushing to mash the button to eat (D-pad “Up”). I know we’re all supposed to be amazing gamers and never make mistakes, but I quite regularly end up hitting “D-Pad Left” or “D-Pad Right” at the same time. This results in me standing there with my daggers in my hand not able to fire my bow, then I have to remember which button to press to get back to my bow to be useful again.

As I can’t “un-purchase” my second Main Hand and Off Hand slots, I tried unequipping my second quiver and daggers, but that just means if I hit the wrong direction, I end up with nothing in my hands. I then went into the settings and removed the mapping for swapping main hand and off hand items but the game won’t let me save the controls with any actions unmapped.

Suggestion: Allow us the option to save button mapping with actions unmapped.

At this stage, my options are: “Get better noob” which ain’t happening, or seeing if I can find the config file to edit manually, or using a 3rd Party App to mess with my controls in a way to stop them from working.

if you go the third party route, I prefer steam, and you can add a hold activator to the buttons. I find 150ms is the sweet spot for hard push activation without waiting for it, and it allows quick taps commands if you decide you want to.

And if you go the second route, the button mapping is in AccountSettings_LOCAL.dat. Button settings in there aren’t sanitised much on loading, so you can unbind buttons by binding them to an unused button ID.

unbinding it would be ideal if you have no interest in gear swap as hold activation of any length will make the dpad frustrating to use in menu.

by the way…. could i bind keyboard keys to the controller mode with the .Dat file?

In the .dat file, the GamepadMap key has options for setting a keyboardItem, but pressing any keyboard key reverts control mode to exclusively using the keyboard for me. I’ve not been successful in setting up a hybrid control mode.
