Why is the Stamina Wheel while resource gathering hard to find (UX)

If I’m fishing IRL I look at the water/fish. If I’m chopping wood, I look at the wood.
If the timing wheel was on the resource itself instead of the hero, it would feel more immersive.

This is most noticeable when fishing. I naturally want to to look toward the fish jumping up out of the water, but the timing wheel is over my head. So I find myself ignoring the fish and staring at my hero which feels kinda weird.

Slight tweak but I think it would feel a lot better.

Plus when fishing the “Perfect” or whatever timing you get is on the fish. So you are staring at your hero for the timing but it tells you how you did on the fish. Both on the fish make way more sense.

I just look at my character animations to time it. Works a lot better then looking at the progress circle for me.

yeah its a minor thing but the game wants you to look at the fish visually, but the player practically. And then the “perfect” timing goes over the fish, so your eyes are darting back and forth. Easy fix I reckon.

I would like for the skillcheck(the minigame when u use tools)’s UI when u fish to be where the fish is, not where my character is.

Also sometimes the line of the fishing rod floats above the water(very noticeable when u are fishing from higher up and not water level), would be nice too if u could see the line/hook touching the water and making a little splash or ripple effect.

The reason the Ring is on your character is to not overload the UI and make unnecessary elements the game is using your stamina ring for the gathering mini game

I’m not entirely convinced about the fishing UX after the progress circle was added. When gathering other resources, the character stands right next to the object and the camera barely moves, so the progress circle is easy to locate.

During fishing, however, the bait is thrown and the camera follows it, but once the action finishes, the progress circle appears back near the character. Because perspective scaling is applied, the circle can appear very small or very large depending on the relative position of the character and the bait. In some environments, the circle’s color also blends with the background, resulting in low contrast.

This makes the circle harder to find. (Fitts’ law, which describes the relationship between target size, distance, and the time required to acquire it.)

He is saying the ring should appear near the bobber rather than on your character. Which I agree with; when you fish the camera pans towards the line cast and my eye is naturally drawn to where the bobber is.

When you are cutting trees, digging sand or fishing in areas with different light envoirments, the circle sometimes almost disappear or become one color. That way is easy to lost items because is hard to know where the sweet red spot is.

The suggestion is to make the circle in a way that is always over everything and a solid color, not incluencied by anything around. This way the circle is always helpful and we not have to guess when to push the button in the right time.

Could you Show a Screenshot of it just in case it isnt something unintended?

it always felt weird to me that the quick time circle is at the character and not at the fishing spot.

But it could also be that the stamina bar is being misused for that event, because it kinda looks like it’s the same for mining and woodcutting, which isnt so jarring there, because the character is close there, but for fishing it’s weird…

Yea i can agree to some extent with that.

But! if i were to fish and the circle appeared near the fishing spot then I wouldn’t notice if enemies are sneaking up on me or if they are nearby because my focus isnt close to the character and its surroundings.

My experience was that the first couple times I fished, I was wholly confused. I did not see the circle (I was looking at the fishing spot) and just pressed randomly.

Pretty sure it’s because other games I played such as Animal Crossing or Temtem have really imprinted the idea that you look carefully at the fishing spot. NRFTW did break the pattern for me in this way.

I would like the Green “Perfect” timing thing for fishing be on the fish itself and not on the player. I feel like it’s more intuitive that way because it took me like a few tries to realize the wheel was actually on me rather than the fish

This would also make sense because if youre at enemy lines, you shouldnt be fishing anyway, so its kind of immersive if you get sneaked on while fishing? Lol
