The game is causing my entire PC to shutdown instantly, no warning or anything, just fully shutdown blank screens no restart. It was happening when booting the game but that seems to have stopped after I tinkered with some Microsoft GameInput service stuff, but now it’s crashing in the nameless pass.
There are no logs in Eventviewer for some of the crashes, and others report a chain of event ID 187 into 109 over and over just before the shutdown.
It’s not my temperatures, they never get much above 60C on GPU or CPU. This is the only game that does this, and it seems there are reports in here and on the steam forums of this similar kind of crashing happening for other people, but no solution has been found. At this point it’s making the game entirely unplayable, just random crashes that take my entire PC with it.
So far I believe the culprit to be my GPU, a Gigabyte RX 9070 XT. Under stress tests and in game the GPU utilization goes to 100% and sends the GPU Hotspot Temp skyrocketing to over 110C, hitting the thermal throttle limit of the card, even though the average temp of the card is still at 60C. This seems to be a somewhat known issue with this card, and could potentially be solved by reapplying thermal paste or just simply RMA’ing the card as this shouldn’t be happening.
By turning the setting in game from FSRAA → Balanced or Performance, the GPU utilization stays at a normal 60-70% and the hotspot temp stays near the average temp of the card. I will continue to test and see if this fixes the crashing problem.
It could potentially be your power supply. GPUs that clock up rapidly like that can go from asking for 150 watts to asking for 500 watts in the blink of an eye.
Power supplies have a lot of built-in protections against what they call “transient spikes.” Big jumps of power that seem potentially dangerous.
For what it’s worth, I am playing on a 9070 non-XT at 3440x1440 ultrawide resolution with everything basically cranked to the max and I have not had a single unexpected shutdown.
My previous card was a 5700XT, and Avowed caused it to constantly shut down due to transient spikes until I reduced the graphics.
On top of what Steve said, early-access games are not as stable as a finalized product, so their demand will fluctuate more and reveal issues like this.
Thanks for the update as well Virne, hope you can find a good middleground!
