Probably this issue has been addressed but haven’t found any thread. The question is simple: runes are compatibile only with weapons of the same type? or of the same species?
To be more clear: one handed axe runes can only go with one handed axes and two handed sword runes can go with two handed sword runes? or a can you exchange types? of example a two handed sword rune can go on a two handed axe? is there a general rule or in order to know the compatability you need to extract them destroying the weapon. You will find weapons that have runes from different weapon types on like the:
1H Rusty Kopesh it has a 2H rune but you cant slot in other 2H runes on it. Can extract and use on 2H weapons
1H knife Butchers Work it has a dual wielding dagger rune on it. Can extract and use on dual daggers
I know there is more just doesnt remember atm..
And NO sadly you can only atm use 1H on 1H, 2H on 2H, dual dagger on dual dagger, except for Ilaria’s stamina based runes those you can put on all weapon types except Unarmed, Utility, Bows and Shields

but why some of the runes i apply simple just don’t work? i see an icon but i does not work. 1h rune for 1h weapon yes. some of them works some of them are not
