[CRASH] BSOD - SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (dxgmms2.sys) - RTX 5090 / Ryzen 7 9800X3D

I am experiencing a complete system crash (Blue Screen of Death) while playing. The crash does not just close the game; it crashes Windows entirely.

I ran a “WhoCrashed” analysis on the dump file, and it points to dxgmms2.sys (DirectX Graphics MMS) with the Bugcheck code 0x7E (SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED).

This seems to be a driver/DirectX interaction issue. My Player.log also shows multiple warnings about VSync being broken (“Direct3D: detected that vsync is broken”) and recurring NullReferenceException errors just before the system goes down.

System Specs:

  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

  • OS: Windows 11

Files & Evidence: I have attached all the requested files below, including:

  • Player.log

  • DataStore folder

  • Crashpad reports

  • DxDiag.txt

  • Screenshot of the WhoCrashed analysis.

Reproduction Steps:

  1. Launch the game.

  2. Play for a variable amount of time.

  3. The system freezes and crashes to a BSOD.

Notes: The logs indicate that the game is reverting to kGfxThreadingModeClientWorkerJobs because kGfxThreadingModeSplitJobs is not supported on Direct3D 11, and shortly after, VSync fails.

Hi Silas,

Checking in to see if there are any updates from the dev team on this escalation. Since my last post, I’ve noticed a few others with 50-series cards reporting similar dxgmms2.sys or nvlddmkm.sys crashes.

Some users mentioned that a recent Windows update (KB5074109) might be conflicting with the latest NVIDIA drivers, while others found that DP 2.1 cable mismatches were causing instability on the 5090. Has the team been able to determine if this is a game-side optimization issue with D3D11/VSync or if there’s a specific driver/OS workaround recommended for this hardware config?

Thanks!

Hey jasj,

The moderator team has been instructed to let everyone know that that windows driver specifically has also been causing issues for NRFTW.

Kris from Moon Studios announced it here: Discord

With that being said, that’s all the information I currently have available to me

I’ve already removed KB5074109 from my system, uninstall and reinstalled drivers, changed many configs but I’m still getting regular crashes, however I’ve somehow prevented the system from crashing windows and it only crashes the game. One thing I noticed is that limiting my FPS to 140 seems to mitigate the crashes for 30 minutes or so, would uploading more logs help getting some dev attention to shed some light into what might be affecting me particularly?

I’ve pushed your problem with priority, it’s been received but now it’s a waiting game, sorry man :man_shrugging: .

From my time on this forum though I can say this; A blue screen of death is usually happening if a game exposes a problem on your system. I’ve had no other reports of this since Together for example. I hope I don’t offend you by saying it is most likely on your end.

If I find anything here that will help your situation I will report it here!

Might you find a solution yourself, I will also be glad to hear it since it can serve other future playere
